Looking to buy a VPS!
Hello Admincraft Discord!
I’m considering buying a VPS instead of using a Managed Minecraft service. Previously, I’ve used a Hosting Company for a few months, which I won’t name. While their service was decent, their Customer Service Support was not great, and often had to wait several days for a response.
Because of this, I’m looking to switch to a VPS. This would give me more freedom and flexibility without relying on slow Customer Service. Although I’m new to managing a VPS, I am quite tech-savvy and interested to learn.
With that said, can anyone recommend a great Hosting Provider that offers VPS? I’d prefer something well-established, and a high-quality service that is affordable/reasonably priced! Ideally, I’d like to pay quarterly but I am open to anything if that’s not really available.
Thank you! 🫶🏼

What's your PLEB?
Plan/Players
Location
Edition
Budget
how come you wanna use a vps vs managed panel?
I understand the sentiment entirely
P/P: Budget Plan / 25-30 + Additional Separate Server for Server Testing (around 5-10 players).
L: Los Angeles or Europe.
E: Java Edition server, with GeyserMC for cross-platform compatibility.
B: Preferably around $10 or less (if possible).
vm's are kinda pricy depending on what you want to do with it
ill wait for you to answer my question supposedly
I’d like to use a VPS because it gives me more flexibility compared to the Managed Panel.
With a VPS, it provides me more control over the server, and can do things as needed or necessary, rather than waiting on Support to make changes for me. While Managed Panels are convenient, I prefer to learn and manage things on my own, as well as avoid delays that I had experienced with the Hosting Service in the past! 🫡
can you name ur previous host?
if you want, but if you have a good host they dont really need a vps to serve yourself the support times
as vps's are still Prone to issues that need support tickets :LUL:
if you want truly self managed you get a dedicated server :YEP:
Yeah, of course! I used to go with GravelHost. Their services are okay, but their support just isn’t great. A lot of people have the same issues with their lack of support within tickets.
They don’t seem to have VPS, and the amount of time people have complained in their Discord is making me just want to switch ASAP. Hence why I am here haha
rough
Indeed.
i can give you a list of Good providers that have good support times as well
they have both vps, and games panels
but games panels will be ofc cheaper
Pebblehost, Pufferfish, Bloom, Lilypad, ServCity, Birdflop, and Berrybyte
i removed 1, Enviromc which is dirt cheap but as youd suspect shit support times
the rest are good and quick with their responses
Yeah, I gotcha!
Which one would be best for Game Hosting-wise and VPS-wise, considering the prices and everything?
servcity
still kinda expensive but its cheap

Interesting, will have a look into it!
Thank you for providing the providers and help as well! Very appreciated and helpful 🙂

If you've got the money nothing compares to renting a dedi
you can do literally whatever you want, install monitoring software, spin up web deployments alongside your server, install panel software and extensions, spin up a new server whenever you want, lots of resources to use and full administrative control and scalability
and yeah, like Clyde said, VPS =/= not needing support tickets
You will likely end up making just as many support tickets when something fucks up, plus you got noisy neighbors to deal with since those resources are still shared with other clients
Hiya! After looking into the Hosting Links provided, I’m thinking of going with Birdflop’z EU Premium 4GB VPS. I think it’s doable to set up a Pterodactyl Panel and create a Minecraft server with it..
What are your guys’ thoughts before I make the purchase if any? thanks! 😄
4GB to run the OS, MySQL, wings, Redis, pterodactyl, AND a Minecraft server???
No.
Not without a significant swap space, which would tank your performance
Unless you’re running a minestom server, you need 4GB at least just to run the Minecraft server alone, as well as 1-2GB overhead for the container, plus you gotta factor in the VPS itself needs overhead to run all the software.
Use the mc plan not vps
If all youre gonna do is ptero + mc its just gonna be a worse experience
^
never buy a small vps for gaming
Contabo🥇Cloud VPS & Dedicated Servers for a Price You'll Love
More Computing Power for Less | Award-Winning Support from an Actual Person - not a Bot! | 9 Regions, 12 Locations | 99.996% Uptime Over the Last 12 Months
VDS=Virtual Dedicated Server. Think vps but with dedicated resources
thats a nice joke friend
contabo is Horrible
Not for the price. If he can afford it id go with a dedi from hetzner
it is
dont suggest a place you dont know the truth on
its like suggesting bisect to a person who needs a budget
^
Absolute dogshit suggestion, Stax
not good cpu, not even that good pricing, horrible ddos protection and networking
and support is also awful iirc
they dont have ddos protection IMO lol
i think its just a rate limiter and firewall
it’s shit
Then why suggest it :9327beluga:
hey bro crack is bad for you
you should still get it because its cheap
:Cat_Bruh:
Ah gotcha! My apologies for that genuinely
Would the 8GB or 12GB plan work for this, or not at all? I think it’s something I can definitely afford to purchase. I also want to set up a Discord bot within the panel, not just for Minecraft.
(And no, I’m not going with Contabo or a VDS from them lmao)
I think with a 6-8GB heap size you can get by with a 12GB VPS, but I would still set up swap space for good measure and to avoid OOMEs. Also, would not recommend hosting your discord bot on the same VPS. You can use Oracle cloud or another cheap VPS for that.
In my experience wings, MySQL, ptero, Redis, need at least 2 GB to run uninterrupted, and you will need overhead for your container (usually 1-2GB.
Gotcha! So the 12GB plan would be the best (and safest) option to go with, if I understand correctly perhaps..
Is there a guide on how to set up the Swap Space? I’ll make sure not to host the Discord bot on the same VPS. I appreciate the help!
Ask Ubuntu
How to increase swap space?
I have, by default, 250MB of swap space in Ubuntu, and I want to expand it to a larger size. I need 800MB, which I think will be enough to open several applications without having to hit the current
Pterodactyl.io has a guide for swap space
askubuntu.com is your Best Friend Ever
It’s best practice to avoid swap where possible, but can save you from crashes on a low memory environment
In fact, most “budget” Minecraft servers HEAVILY abuse swap, since general storage is much cheaper than memory
Thank you both!
Gotcha, that’s a bit unfortunate to know, but well appreciated nonetheless!
is there a reason you want to use a vps?
"budget" vps is no different
its worse then that, if you get DDoSed they will cancel the entire vps and not get you a refund
not nullroute, cancel it
and ban you
dont use swap
Yeah, not even under big ddos attacks
like i know someone was using contabo for their minecraft server
they got a few bot attacks off of free mcstorm (which is like 50-100mbps at most)
and a few minutes later the server lost connection and they got an email saying it was canceled
deleted completely
no way to get it back
really? I've used hetzner for loads of stuff and never to submit a ticket
They Run My Box
hetzner is a Good vps seller. their uptime is really great and don’t have a lot of issues
but when you get vps from smaller hosts it has all sorts of issues
