Recommendations for everyday jacket?
I have been looking for an all-round everyday jacket that i can wear mainly during spring and autumn, but have so far come up short. I want it to be reasonably water resistant, enough that i can be outside in light rain without water getting in. It does not have to be completely waterproof as i think it will impact breathability.
Light insulation is preferable, so that it can be used by itself during warmer weather and layered during colder.
Not too picky on price, but i was recommended an arcteryx beta insulated which is 900 USD, and that is just too much money and too much jacket. I was thinking around 300 USD range but i am flexible if something catches my eye.
Does a jacket like this exist?
Please help me with any recommendations:cdg:

I think it realy depends on style, but im gonna guess it most cases a better option will be a light jacket and a shell. but something like a waxed cotten may work. but like you said more water resistance is less breathabilty/comfort
any pics you have of jackets you like the style of could be helpfull
to get an idea of what vibe you want
I am leaning towards the arcteryx/techwear style, but most of those jackets are just shells and i would like to be able to use the jacket with just a t-shirt in milder weather. I feel like shells are pretty much unusable without layers but i might be wrong. This is what the arcteryx beta insulated looks like:
if you are ok with very outdoors/techwear style, then look for soft shell jackets, not hard shells
Rab is really good and what i use for hiking
dead bird has decent soft shells but they tend to be more expensive due to brand
Tilak has some sexy pieces but also pricey
I’ve got a Jotun MiG that I love
I really like my Monk sweater from Tilak too
900 dollars for a jacket???
What temps do you need to deal with, I live in the western UK and for a lot of the year a shell plus light layers is fine - but your climate might be different.
Broadly speaking I'm in the 20f+ but always damp range.
you must be new here
anyway, ime you'll get more use out of layers than trying to get a single everything-in-1 jacket. for you, it sounds like a softshell plus like a fleece or flannel shirt would do the trick
I'd put it this way, in the same way guitars and amps can range in price due to their quality so can clothing. Material, fit, brand, technique (dyeing, distressing, etc) and how many are made can all play a factor into the pricing of jackets
not to mention people value different things and choose to spend their money (however much it is) in certain ways; unless it's unrealistically low i don't see a need to question someone's budget
like chopper said knowing your temp range/environment would be helpful; i run hot and used to get away with an old patagonia 3L hard shell with pit zips but am dealing with temperate weather most of the year
Definitely need to know temp range. And when you say "be outside in light rain", do you need something with a hood, or are you open to hoodless jackets?
