Cowboy Hat Style/Colour

Hey folks, looking to buy a cowboy hat that isn’t from amazon this time. Was wondering what you guys think would suit me best. Was immediately thinking a cattleman in brown as I usually wear brown leather. Seen a lot online that the advice for a first hat is to go with a silverbelly one but I worry I’ll look washed out. Will add some of my recent westernwear looks so you can see what I’m going for. Budget of like £120.

it absolutely is! I got mine from Hey Cowboy! in London, but I think those are too expensive in your current budget. I think silverbelly is prolly a bit easier to wear, but brown works as well. The brand of mine is american hat co. which is supposedly comparable to stetson but has less brand recognition. So you might find some in your size on ebay.

As much as anything getting down to london would be out my price range! haha. Will give american hat co. a google. Wild Westernwear seem to have an okay range just unsure of quality on them

WHO THE FUCK oh what's up I look Warp is another dude that would be good here @warpweftwatergate Are you able to go to a hat store at all? You should really go try some on because there are so many little variable details that can make or break for a hat. Plus you can get someone who can tell you what kind of hat shapes go best with the shape of your face, and all that. Which to be clear is much different than that bullshit about if you have x skin color you should only wear x fabric colors. Love those fits up there btw

Yeah, you have a really solid base going already! those slap

Yeah, even if those hats in that shop mentioned above are out of your range (which you should save up for in my opinion) you can at least try a bunch on. Brim widths matter so much I have found

Thank you both! There’s one sorta near me as the crow flies, but seems a pain to get to as I don’t drive but I’ll see if I can get down to it. Think they’re shut till February so by then I’m sure I can stretch the budget a bit too

Do you have any inspo pics saved? That helps with trying to find something

Try looking at some old vintage pics too. You'll see some nice variations on all the crown shapes

@deltic brown or taupe are the most versatile but I wouldn’t eliminate a lighter gray option or a (good) straw hat either.

Love the fits. I was thinking stetson but mostly because of the brand haha. Will do some digging and lyk
warpweftwatergate
Stetson will be the most easily found out of the US most likely. There are a lot of hat companies out there, many very expensive, but Stetson is imo the best bang for your buck

I quite like this American Hat makers for £120. 3 3/4" brim and 4 1/2" crown. Also these Legacy 8X's in buckskin and silverbelly, both with a 4" brim though I was thinking of perhaps a darker brown than these.

I'd probably max $100 or 85 usd for that first one since a brand new one is $160. Same for that stetson. You can get a new one for not much more. Also in case you didn't know, the XX thing pretty much means nothing from my search. Look up the you tube channel "hats and guitars" Really helpful and super kind dude. Been talking about hats for decades

delticOP3d ago
Will stick about those prices. If I don’t get that Resistol I’m gonna try get in touch with the shop that I can get to and find out what they have before I try to go as it would be a pain to get to them but worth it if they have the right thing

You could age that stetson by the tags if you go dig for that info. Basically anything 70's and newer is not that great quality-wise, so they say. But that's generally all hats post-hat decline That you tube channel has all sorts of interesting videos though on that stuff You can learn sooooo much there

Will give them a look up, cheers Won the auction on the resistol. Think I’m going to give reshaping it a go but unsure. Final bid was £47 +3.50 shipping I’m slightly apprehensive about it just on the fact it’s a bit battered and bruised but i have (some) faith haha. I don’t suppose anyone has any guides on shaping hats at home? Always got the option to return it If it’s like properly difficult, I’m leaning towards this ariat

I mean, it's all good if you're willing to lose the money you bid on it. That's the only thing to accept about ebay buys I think you got a good price on it!
deltic
delticOP2d ago
Yeah I’ll be fine with the loss if it doesn’t work not my first stupid purchase

I think you did good

I’d say so too, just hope shaping it goes well haha

It'll be fine, it's fun! You could always find a hat shop and they could help you too
deltic
delticOP2d ago
Not a whole lot near me. Gonna try some local cobblers as there’s a chance they might. Failing that just gonna do it myself. Got a hat shop about 2hrs away I can get to if I mess it up

Yeah i use iron steam to shape mine Like push the button that shoots steam out
