Setting up Kip for different devices
Hello
Is there somewhere I can find out how to set up different Kip dashboards for different devices. I understand I can set up different users and when they log in they get different layouts but I can't for the life of me work out how. It makes absolutely no sense to me how the storage works and I can't find any walkthrough or turorial/youtube video that explains it.

What part can’t you figure out?
I can't quite get the global/user scope idea. But I think I am getting there. I have to log in as a specific user, set up my layout and that then gets saved as "default"? In other words one is only ever viewing the "default" configuration and if you save different layouts you have to copy them to "default"? Increasingly I am finding that my brain works very differently to most other people on this planet.
I’m not a Kip user, so not sure how the layouts work. @David Godin can help, maybe post that question in #kip
Have a look at the Help in the app
I tried that. Still didn't sink in but I think I have got it now.
You are not alone. The logic behind how it "saves" is, let's say, peculiar. Fantastic program, but in the previous version it was quite easy to save a layout for each device and it just worked. Now, not so much.
I'm glad you said that. Sometimes I conclude that I am simply stupid. Maybe that's still true!
Hi, it would be so nice indeed to succeed to understand the logic behind the saving setting option.
It is ok to save the settings/layout under a specific "profile" but after no way to load one of these saved profiles
It’s pretty much explained in KIP help. Maybe the wording is not clear. We had multiple users review and update the doc. Tell me what you trying do and I’ll explain.
It should probably be simplified. The way it is now is very flexible but gets people confused. I’ll probably take the Apple approach and remove features in favour of simple and easy.
Most don’t read documentation and 90% of users don’t need much: select user or device mode plus a download/upload config buttons.
Maybe we don’t even need a device mode. Just put in you SK credentials.
Thank you so much again for your reply. I will read better the help.
Tell me what you’re trying to do. I find that sometimes, not always, users try to achieve something but just go at it the wrong way. Like if you want to replicate a layout on multiple devices - no need to copy or download a config. Just sign in with the same.
I didnt reply your question. My goal is to have for example 2 different layout. One setup with 2 pages layout.
And one setup with a 3 pages layout.
Then I would like to be able to load one "setup" or the other.
Not sure if my request is clear
Clear. How often will you switch and for what purpose?
I want to do this on the same device. At least this was my first idea.
Ok
Are the 2 pages the same for each?
For example during navigation when my tablet is in the cockpit I wanted only 2 pages.
And after the navigation a setup with 3 pages. With more instruments like the engines, battery.
But this is maybe not necessary indeed.
This was an idea.
Maybe not realistic
For example for the first "setup" with 2 pages:
- first page: freeboard sk + compass+ speed
- second page: wind speed + depth + temperature + baro pressure
And for the second "setup" :
The 2 first pages will be the same indeed
Then the third page would have engine value display (rpm, battery voltage, coolant temp, etc)
And other cabin environnement values.
Again this is really optional. So if it is not possible, i can do with 3 pages constantly.
It was just the idea to have a setup more simple while navigating.
So yes the 2 pages would be the same for each.
So you can’t share or sync/update page layouts between profiles
It’s all or nothing.
You can have 2 different users each with its own layout.
And you can copy a layout to another user. Well it’s not just the page layout. It’s the whole KIP config
Ok. Tomorrow I will really read the doc 😇
Excellent that it is possible to have the possibility to have 2 users each with its own layout 👍👍👍
Exactely what I need.
Ok each user as its own profile for the whole KIP config.
The issue will be you will have to change users every time. Not ideal. So it would probably be better to have one 3 page layout
I change user when I connect to the SK server in the KIP settings, isnt it?
If yes, it is pretty ok for me
I use different user for different device and screen size, like phone. And my wife has her own so she can do as she like
This is indeed a really good idea too👍👍
For example between my phone and my future tablet.
And in this way no need to change user as you recommend it.
Top.
Really thank you so much for your help, your work on this great app and your patience 👍👍👍🤗
Some user have different screens onboard and the create different users for say, mast display, nav station and helm screens
To copy config between users, you have to copy to Global storage first. Can’t do user to user direct copy due to security restrictions. Global is the “public” storage space.
So copy to Global. Sign in with the other user and copy from Global to user.
There are two ways storage works. Stored on the server or locally on the device browser (in the browser storage - like cookie data). You can copy from a server to local, then back to a different server and/or different user.
You just can’t do it the traditional way - using download/upload with files.
It’s all in the documentation. Reach out in the KIP channel if you don’t find what you need.
I have had a very quick re read of the help page and although it was a while ago I think I was confused simply by the word "default". It took me a while to realise that the word default meant the only page you can see, if that's the way to put it. In my head a default is something that is a starting point. I probably am not explaining myself very well but I think I didn't understand that when you log in as a user you can only ever see the "default" page for that user and saved configurations have to be copied over to the default. I don't know if I can think of a better way of putting it though right now. When I get some time I'll see if I can understand why it took me a while to get my head round it.
Yeah. I’ve had so many people not getting it that I’ll relabel and change the mechanics a bit.
But you are right. KIP always loads default. You can copy it to a new name to create a backup, and you can overwrite it to restore
It’s labeled that way because the feature has evolved over 9 years but it really works differently now days. The wording stayed. Older users understand but for new users it’s bizarre
The word backup is helpful. "Backup configuration to server" rather than "save" might have helped me, but you can't cater for everybody. I think my brain was put in sideways when I was built.
