Clothing fit advice when in between sizes

After gaining some muscle mass exercising, I have found size M to often have too narrow shoulders but I worry that size L will have a too wide body. What compromise would you look for in this situation? Pictures are for reference; it is a size M which I am currently debating whether or not to return.

Generally or in this specific case?

I'll be honest I didn't look at your pics, but if the size M is too small in the shoulders then you're gonna have to size up

it ultimately comes down to your desired fit in the item ssome things you might want the extra room, some things you might want skin tight I'd personally take the larger size in this polo

Definitely size up. Some extra in the torso is way better than not enough in the shoulders. If you don’t like that look, you can always look for tailored/fitted/slim/muscle/whatever-other-adjective a brand uses for their narrower bodied shirts.

Size up; it is much too small in the shoulders. It is also slimmer everywhere else than my personal preferences. If you keep gaining muscle, it could be completely unwearable sooner than you think.
