Lower ping on vpn than without vpn (EU -> Tokyo)
How? i get 150 less ping when i turn my vpn to tokyo. Im playing on tokyo servers with a friend so im expecting high ping (200 - 250), but without a vpn i get 400

Hello could you pls answer some questions for me
who is your isp
and what country do you play from
We do not support cross region play my friend, if you want to play from EU to TOKYO you have to use VPN unfortunately
oh alr
i mean eu has a tokyo server
i think what they're trying to ask is why they get less ping when using a vpn when compared to not using a vpn, which is probably just because of routing
Great question! Okay so to understand why using a VPN might give you better ping when playing cross-region in VALORANT, it’s important to know a bit about how internet traffic works and what RiotDirect does.
RiotDirect is Riots own network infrastructure in short, designed to optimize connections by partnering directly with ISPs. When you're playing in your own region RiotDirect makes sure your game data (packets) takes the best and shortest/most efficient route to Riots servers which is minimizing delays and ploss.
However, when you’re playing cross-region, say from EU to APAC, RiotDirect does not apply, so things get different. Your data is sent across the public internet, where it has to hop between various networks, which may not be optimized for gaming. These hops will introduce more latency, and since you're far from the server, your data has to travel longer distances through potentially congested or suboptimal routes.
A VPN can sometimes provide a better path because it might route your traffic through a more direct or less congested connection. Especially if you're using a good VPN service that is using high performing networks that bypass some of the inefficient parts of the public internet. So while RiotDirect works within the region it doesn’t fully control cross-region connections. The VPN can help you "skip" some “bad” parts of the route by creating a more optimized path to the server in APAC and potentially lowering your ping.
That said, it’s worth noting that using a VPN can improve the route, but there’s always a chance for issues like added latency or instability, the best thing is to play in your region.

Yeah this is understandable but afaik this shouldnt amount to over 150ms of decreased latency, especially with a relatively low quality vpn
what vpn u use
I remember previously ive played on tokyo servers as well (I'm using an AP account for this btw), and the ping used to be much better, not to say it was good, but it was somewhat playable
this is either a absolute text of brilliancy or gpt junk
I tried hotspot shield, but cloudflare warp gave me the same result
cloudfare does give better ping
idk its just how it works
yeah which makes sense, but i looked at all other regions (EU, AP and NA) and the ping difference with warp was like
sometimes maybe 5ms faster, often 10ms slower
Took me 20 min to write that.
tokyo being the only exception, giving me 150ms less
holy shit that is remarkable
Playing without a vpn makes it literally unplayable, not to say im complaining cause obviously thats not the server i should be playing on
but i was just curious about why its so much worse now vs roughly a year ago when i did the same (without vpn)
It would have taken longer if I hadn't used a spell checker... my spelling is questionable at best.
there really is no need 😭
In short, your ISP is taking you through an inefficient route for cross-region connections.
thanks for the detailed explanation btw :)
👍
i dont know what to tell u tbh
nvm bwaarin knows
dang
i guess yeah but it only happens on valorant, if i use some websites to check ping to various japanese servers i always consistently get around 240 to 260 ms of ping
you study network engineering or smth?
Routes can very heavily.
but then valorant gives me 390, without vpn, and the same ~250 with both vpns ive tried
Everything is being routed differently.
i suppose
eg if u ised a different vpn it might give you a higher ping than witbout
The best solution is to play in your local region👍
wait bro do u study network enginnering
yeah higher ping on vpn is what i was expecting, which is also the case for literally ever server except tokyo lmao
or smth
Correct
im wanting to study engineering but idk what type
yeah ik i was just playing with a friend from that region
so im tryna like see whats each one is abt
wait im trippjng
There are a lot of different types. Try to think of something you enjoy and follow that path.
do u/did you study network engineering?
how u kbow so much
or maybe bro just smart 😔
