Opinions on legacy (1.8) and modern servers (1.20+)

Just wanted to read people's opinion regarding this topic While modern versions are the go to for most players and server owners, the reality is that there's still a lot of people playing on 1.8 (even 1.7 which is +10 yrs old) and worst, some new players go straight to 1.8 And some players simply can't play on latest versions because of old hardware. While it's realistically not appropriate to keep running 10 yr old software for server owners, there are projects that patch exploits, update some stuff to make it compatible with modern java versions and even backport modern patches and optimizations. Do you think this is appropriate? In my opinion, I believe that 1.8 should be left to die, but since players ask for it, I don't see anything wrong with server owners wanting to use it, as long as they know what they're doing. What's yours? -# I feel this was an interesting topic to discuss and wanted to hear different POVs

I personally starting playing long after 1.8 was released, so it would be a major regression to go to 1.8 My computer is pretty cheap but can still run modern minecraft reasonably fine if I have sodium and lithium with no other apps open, on linux. I suppose if you don't know how to add mods, you run windows, and you have bad hardware, then you could use 1.8. But really people should just know how to optimize their game As for the combat, mods/plugins can basically reproduce it on modern versions So no, I wouldn't ever use or encourage others to use 1.8. That being said, people can play whatever version they want and I don't have a problem with other people using 1.8 1.8 can also be problematic when users ask for 1.8 support in modern projects like velocity and geyser, that really shouldn't be asked to do that

What I don't like about 1.8 server owners is that some of them expect full long-term support for plugins, which makes maintenance of those plugins and transitioning to paper much more complicated However, about 1.8 old combat being reproduced in modern versions, it can be done for most casual gamemodes, but there are people that actually can tell the difference between real 1.8 combat and one emulated with old combat mechanics or similar plugins Most common stuff I heard is related to knockback and fishing rod detections, also block-hitting It would be interesting if someone can make some statistics about this, I only tested it with 3 friends and they were able to tell the difference (and obviously hate on the modern version)

I bet that it could be reproduced on modern versions. It's just that the people who notice/care about the differences all play on 1.8 and have no interest in leaving it Yeah I agree with you on this one. Doesn't make sense except for paid plugins

Probably most of the people that complain only repeat whatever they saw on yt, but there's indeed people that can tell the difference They don't deny it can be reproduced, but they say all attempts have been unsuccessful so far I actually saw a video from a guy talking about it a month ago, let me see if I can find it

Everyone said that bedrock and java would never be able to play together everyone said there would never be a multithreaded minecraft server that is stable these sort of things probably can be done, but it's probably not worth the time

This was the vid, the guy found a sv that sort of properly emulated 1.8 combat But at the beginning he mentions what hasn't been accomplished by plugins up to that point (hit registration in this case) Like I said, they don't deny it can be reproduced

Another problem is that 1.8 combat with netherite is probably too powerful
duolingo se acerca
I don't think it makes much of a difference if both players have it What's actually to powerful for 1.8 mechanics are probably the axes, not sure if the mace
