First server, please help me not screw it up!
So here’s some backstory: me and a couple of my buddies just threw together a server from leftover parts after upgrading our gaming rigs. I’ve been into computers for a bit (tryna get a career out of cybersecurity), so I think I’ve got a decent plan, but I figured I’d ask for advice before I screw something up. I’m picking up the last of the parts in a few hours and plan to install Debian 12 on it. I wanna remote desktop into it (not SSH), but I’m not sure what the best software is for that (Reccomendations would b greatly appreciated). The plan’s to use the server for stuff like Minecraft (Vanilla, light modding, maybe something like Crazycraft), Terraria, a couple Discord bots I made, etc (rust?). Specs are an i5 9400F, GTX 1650, 16GB DDR4, and a something gb NVMe SSD. I know it can’t handle all that at once, so I’m looking for something that makes managing/configuring the servers easier without me having to manually do everything (Something with a gui would be ideal, im still tryna keep myself sane). Any solid tools for keeping an eye on resource usage? Is there anything out there that can auto-start/stop servers based on what’s needed at the time? On the security side, I’m good with not downloading shady shit, but if there’s anything extra I should do to lock it down, lmk. Last, are there any other cool things I could run on this thing besides games and bots?
Lmk what you guys think, any advice is greatly appreciated!!
btw just posted something similar on the reddit so that might be why you're seeing this again

You’d want to check out a web game management panel such as pterodactyl or AMP, or crafty controller if you only want to host Minecraft.
Pterodactyl is arguably the standard. Nice UI, easy to use when set up but slightly more complicated to set up and far more easier to fuck up.
AMP is paid but fantastic and easy to install, same for crafty controller.
You’ll want to use Linux of course.
Keeping an eye on resource usage… the panels I listed can do that if you wish through the web panel.
I would warn you, the 9400F isn’t very good for Minecraft
Yea, I was also reccomended Pterodactyl by some guy on reddit, so I think that's what I'll go with
Nice.
We dumped absolutely no extra money into this server, so tbh I'll be happy with whatever performance it gives me 🤷♂️
Yeah that’s fair enough.
If you’re wanting just vanilla definitely use fabric with performance mods (if you don’t care about the vanilla mechanics being sacrificed for performance then use Paper).
Light modding should be fine as long as you pregenerate and use optimisation mods
Medium to heavy modpacks… you’ll struggle
Depends on your player count
Lithium is a good performance mod to start
^^
For something like CrazyCraft, is that something that's completely out of the picture? Even for 2-3 players?
you should be fine.
Just make sure you lower your view distance and sim distance, you pregenerate, etc
!spark you can always make another post with a spark profiler and we can help you
Spark Profiler
Spark can be used to see why your server or client is lagging.
Users can share a spark report via
/spark profiler start --timeout 300
which creates a report after 5 minutes. The spark report is useful in debugging why your server is lagging, so ideally you should always provide one while asking for support.

Alr, gotcha. Will I be able to run this server with Pterodactyl aswell, or are they incompatible?
(The crazycraft server)
One of my friends (The one who contributed the GPU and PSU) is really hoping to play, so hopefully it's pretty smooth
well pterodactyl is the web interface, you create all the servers on there and it facilitates the running and management etc
Ohhh, I gotcha
