Hard to tell without seeing the full fit. Could just be your pants are too slim.

Imagine layering a sweater under

It looks fine on its own, but a big part of determining whether it's too big is seeing how it fits with the rest of your silhouette. It does not look too big to me though. Like Holfram said, you want to be able to layer underneath and these things shouldn't fit tight.

Maybe it looks a bit bigger than your GF is used to with just a t-shirt but you’ll be glad for that layering space.

looks fine peacoats are typically a little big and boxy, helps with layering

Buttons are a bit off to the side, so maybe chest is slightly wide. As already suggested, try to test the fit with some layering as you'd use it to check real fit. Peacoat fit changed during years (I mean issued models, from boxier to slimmer versions), but generally should allow for comfortable layering.

Whatever you’d wear in colder weather bud

Usually I like a nice thick turtleneck, but any heavy sweater works

Put on a sweater and your coat, go outside, check if you’re warm enough

sweater, sweatshirt, tie and sweater vest, t-shirt over a thermal depends on the day and what pants/shoes are being worn
