Are Thursday Duke a good starter Chelsea Boot?
Never had a Chelsea Boot before, and I want to start a boot collection to go with my loafer collection and so on. Thoughts on the Thursday Dukes? Thanks guys.

There’s plenty of better alternatives to Thursday boots - I recommend you go for Blundstones or Solovairs instead?
I'd avoid thursdays, they're overpriced for the quality and the company has some bad business practices
Maybe RM Williams for something a little more sleek
Meermin has a chelsea that is Goodyear welted and pretty sleek.
Frye's can also be really solid around the same price point
That's a bit out of budget unless I'm looking in the wrong place
Plenty of other suggestions in the thread 🙂
Beckett Simonon if you're willing to wait
DM has a Chelsea too but if you’re willing to stretch and you know you’re going to keep em a while I’d go solovair
Gonna hard disagree some of this. I’ve got a pair of Thursday captains and they can take a damn beating and are good quality. I rate em. But… for chelsea’s I’d go Blundstone personally
I think you’re gonna find “Thursday good” a very rare take on this server
Is it me or are blundstones kinda chunky looking, or is that the point?
That's the point
specifying budget and use case (i.e. were you planning to wear these as snow boots as well) would help
will second meermin and docs
budget - 300 US
use - yes wet proofing would be nice for the occasional skip through snow slush or rain, but im not going to be hiking in them, mostly just going to be used for business casual office wear
Why just curious
ugly & overpriced imo
genuine question wym by "starter" boot
the ceo is a member of an antiabortion pac, the company engages in multple questionable business practices and many of their products are ripoffs of more established footwear companies' products (allen edmonds, grant stone, beckett simonon)
i don't know what i meant by that
I guess I meant this would be my first boot, what's a good boot to start with, so that later on when I have more money I can move up to something else
is Frye a good option? it looks like they've got other types of boots, and loafers too - is it worth going down the rabbit hole for this brand?
Tbh, in your budget, just buy what you think looks the best. Agonizing over quality of material or craftsmanship isn’t really a worthwhile endeavor unless you have like a deep appreciation for it that justifies spending more money.
So if you go “ah yeah, I want those”, just buy them.
300 US will get you a nice basic welted boot, probably look for rubber soles and imo a smooth leather because you can get pigmented creme and polish to reverse some of the visible wear over time. Thursday is perfectly fine but the lasts are clunky and as already started the owner makes decisions that many here find off-putting, questionable, and in some cases immoral
There are some foreign brands that make a fantastic boot at around that price, bridlen and CNES come to mind, and I'm pretty sure Grant stone has a good Chelsea but that will be more expensive
Can we pin this for every question with a budget less than $200 or something
