Visual Studio on Mac
Hiya. I'm in the process of moving from Windows to Mac. Now I study C# Web development and the problem I am facing is that Microsoft killed Visual Studio for Mac in August and I need it for uni. Now a friend of mine gave me 2 suggestions. He said that I could either use XCode (Apple's IDE) or if I really need Visual Studio. What I am curious is, do you lot have any ideas?

are you forced to use one ide or the other?
if not, use rider or vscode
Well I am not required to use Visual Studio but the thing is, if I don't use it I can't get IDE-related support from my uni which is not great.
Now what I could also do is get myself a small SSD and run a Bootcamp Win11 installation
But it is quite a faf
Your best bet is Rider
Not sure what "IDE-related support" you'd need tbh
It just works
For certain functions and all that. I can choose what .NET version to use?
Sure
Because in the beginning we used .NET Core 3.1, then we moved towards .Net 6
Well, as long as it's not some ancient .NET Framework
i mean this server can also help you with ide issues
But that doesn't work on Mac in the first place
So what I might do is I could try Rider, and I could try running VS through Crossover
Core 3.1 and up should work just fine
And if I encounter any issues I just yk ask around
ye
Cause Windows 11 is not an OS I like particularly much
Very few people do lmao
Thankfully, both .NET and Rider work on all platforms, so we're good, Mac or Linux
And with Windows 10 support being dropped in the middle of next year, and the fact that I do actually like MacOS I have very few reasons not to switch
i'm sure the 35% of worldwide desktop users use it because they hate it
:WhatChamp:
They use it because they have no other option
I mean I was considering Linux but I can't be bloody bothered to deal with that
Yeah, I feel you
I already use an iPhone and an iPad so the integration would work great
First pick one of 862135 distros based on one of 5512 kernels, then manually compile GPU drivers from a random SourceForge repo lmao
The amount of times I needed iMessage or Facetime on pc and I didn't have them cause yk Windows
So that is a neat benefit
And the fact that file transfers are easier
Yeah, Apple loves locking you in in their little walled garden
My only issue is the fact that Netflix does not have a native app on Mac
I'll be honest, never have I met anybody who would use a desktop app for Netflix lol
I use it
It's nice to be able to download your films onto your laptop when you are travelling
So I found out that my uni does actually provide its students with a Rider license
Rider is free nowadays anyway
For non-commercial uses, that is
But yes, there's an education license as well
I'll just do the same thing I did with VS. I'll just use the free version
