Hosting a server

I read in another post that there might be better and cheaper alternatives to what I already have. So, what do you use when hosting a server? What are your opinions? Both VPS and Hosting are fine. For simplicity, let's say that experience is not a problem and it is for a single Paper server with around 40-70 people. Good amount but not enough justify paying for the absolute best available on the market.

For example, I've been using a Hostinger VPS, which is fine for me and I haven't had problems so far with them, but a guy said there could be better and cheaper alternatives, so I wanted ot read what other people think

hostinger CPUs are generally not great

I'll take a look

how much are you paying for your VPS & what specs?
duolingo se acerca
duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
16gb, 4vCPU for 30usd aprox from last time I did a sv clock speed is not listed But I tested it at the time and yh, it wasn't that great

yeah not worth it better off using a shared host Lilypad is fantastic too

Do you have the urls? I normally prefer VPS so I have some flexibility with my setup, but if host are better, I won't complain

With VPSs you are susceptible to noisy neighbours

duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
I thought that was also the case with shared hosting Good to know
Skullians
Skullians2mo ago
If they oversell then yes but most decent hosts don’t with a vps it’s far easier to do

GHz is irrelevant btw ^^ you should look at cpu singlethreaded performance

you want a singlethread above 3k, preferably above 3.2-3.4k especially for 70 players
duolingo se acerca
duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
However, it is 40usd for 16Gib, still 10usd over the setup with hostinger Realistically speaking, only 13-14 were usable
Skullians
Skullians2mo ago
for a better cpu I’d take it
duolingo se acerca
duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
the rest was for the os and gc
Skullians
Skullians2mo ago
what was the cpu though for hostinger If you still have the hostinger vps run a spark report it will tell you the cpu (hopefully)
duolingo se acerca
duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
So, when u purchase 16 ram in a hosting, you actually get 16 ram? Or do you have to discount what the gc and other processes might consume? I'm not experienced with hosting as you might notice
Skullians
Skullians2mo ago
You actually get 16GB but you always have to leave overhead for the GC - that’s just how Java works you can use Aikar’s flags to alleviate this though

duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
idk, I haven't done a server there in a couple of months But it wasn't good
Skullians
Skullians2mo ago
Most hostinger CPUs are Xeons or epycs which are poor
duolingo se acerca
duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
Probably around 3000
Skullians

and absolutely cannot do 70 players
duolingo se acerca
duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
let me check if I have a spark report around there (and hopefully has not been cleared yet)
Skullians

for 10 bucks more for a far better cpu I’d take it

Found one They use AMD EPYC 9354P 32-Core Processor Doesn't even appear here tho https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+EPYC+9354P&id=5173 2857 pretty low

Yh, definetly btw, when using hosting, do I get to choose stuff like the jvm implementation I wanna use? Server jar ig should be a yes
Skullians
Skullians2mo ago
Yes, most hosts let you choose startup flags yourself (or you make a ticket and they change it for you) Some let you ask for custom java docker images (enviro let me use a custom official ptero graalvm image) (as well as server jar of course, you get full access over your files)
duolingo se acerca
duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
I wanted to play around a bit with graalvm this time, I want to do a test server in a couple of weeks Well, I call them "test server" because it doesn't have everything I'd like them to have In reality those could very well be a fully functional small sv
Skullians
Skullians2mo ago
you can make a ticket with hosts and see if they’ll let you do a free trial I’ve used graalvm and it’s been fantastic (I use graalvm*)
duolingo se acerca
duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
Might give enviro a try then
Skullians
Skullians2mo ago
 they also give unmetered storage (soft cap at 60gb iirc so you make a ticket for an increase)
duolingo se acerca
duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
Since I'm already used to those 30usd, probably will have to cut a bit on ram
Skullians
Skullians2mo ago
which is very nice yeah
duolingo se acerca
duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
Only thing that worries me, not sure if I can explain myself, is if I get the full ram on the advertisement and enviro takes what the gc need. in other words, if I pay for 16GB, the startup flag will contain -Xmx16G (they take care of the gc) or a little bit less? Like -Xmx14G (I take care of the gc)

bean2mo ago
I work for prism and we could set that up for sure, I have not really looked at the context here but if it's just for game hosting we can do that for sure
Skullians
Skullians2mo ago
14gb is generally fine Because 2gb of overhead is usually plenty
duolingo se acerca
duolingo se acercaOP2mo ago
So I do get the ram reduced in the startup flags (I take care of the gc) Do you have an url so I can check your prices? Context is that I wanted to hear opinions from other people regarding this topic thxx The scenario in the post is fictional, my real scenario is an smaller playercount server but using custom models and stuff, so it gets heavy animating models and other stuff. The "test server" is basically a fully functional server, because I've been running seasonal servers for a couple of years, but since I'm running out of ideas, I wanted to make a stable long-term network this time. I called them "test" because I strip some features from the main sv on the network, but for my community those are just another seasonal server, so they just join like usual

I would recommend https://ultraservers.com/aff.php?code=Usvsuaiqkqnaua They have a sale right now where the 1st month is 90% off and 70% off lifetime discount, been using this with my other modpacks too and trying this modpack on 12gb ram is not a issue
