I usually just return/cancel accidental purchases
twice i've had therealreal send me a similar but not identical item to my purcahse. first was a cdgh+ boiled wool pant that the mistaken pair in the same fabric is now my favorite pant. the second was a yohji shirt which was a sidegrade but still good (and not worth trying to swap)

Occasionally I put something in my Amazon cart hoping to consider it later, then I forget I put it in there and I buy something else later and it kind of hitches a ride with the other item. I usually keep it because really if I put it in the cart, I already wanted it, I just needed to convince myself of it

in theory it ticks off the boxes - big, beige, has american iconography, can be used in place of a blazer or sport coat - but i found it difficult to pair in practice
Constantly gambling with lowball ebay offers that often take me by surprise when accepted and feel somewhat accidental. Some of my favorite stuff i’ve gotten that way, but I don’t approach the purchase with as much discernment as I ought to.
In 2014 i got raf x sterling ruby hightops from ssense instead of the lows i ordered, and out of fear i never raised a stink. They’re still sitting in a box unworn. Cool to look at.
