Wool sweaters that don‘t break the bank?

Temperatures have been getting pretty cold so I want to add some nice wool knits to my warderobe. I checked some of the recommendations on this sub, but 200€+ for a sweater is really out of my price range and judging from recent reviews, Uniqlo‘s quality of wool knits has massively declined. I definitely don‘t want to spent more than 100€ on one sweater, but are there even any quality ones available still in this price range? (I live in the Netherlands). Any recommendations would be appreciated🙏 I was looking https://www.genuinescottishknits.com and their products actually seem reasonably priced and quite high quality. Does anybody have experience with them?

Can't speak to that site, but I really like my Aran sweater from https://aranwoollenmills.com, which seems like similar concept kinda

What are some brands to look out for used?

Genuine Scottish Knits is good - they also have an eBay store where you might find better deals From what I've been able to tell it's the same woolen mill as Esk Cashmere, who do a lot of the Made In Scotland knitwear for higher end brands (Nigel Cabourn and MHL to name a couple) This thread also has some more options you might like https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1308499850962276422/1308500293859803200

vintage Pringle is good

The problem there is I don‘t really know which brands to look out for, feels like for Ebay or Vinted shopping you really need to have some expansive knowledge on the subject matter already

Not really ime. Esp for Scottish style knits. Just get something that's 100% wool. Plus there's tons of info on various brands out there already. I'm sure Derek Guy has a blog post of twitter thread running down brands. I got this sweater off ebay, doesn't even have a brand on it https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1116800072093532191/1201210355880300554

Lots of the really good old Scottish and Irish knitwear companies are defunct / no longer exist, so yea loads of great deals from unheard of makers to be found 2nd hand

Gleneagles Alan Paine Kintyre Hawico Peter Scott Johnstons of Elgin McGeorge (of Scotland; Galashiels) Duncan Cameron of Hawick Esk Cashmere Colhay’s Robert Scott Lochcarron John Laing Glenmac Hogg of Hawick (defunct, rare) Hawick Knitwear (defunct) McKenzie Scott & Charters Turner Rutherford Cordings Loch Lanso (Hawick) Barrie Braemar Murray Allan Glenmuir Douglas Page Glen Lyon Kinross William Lockie Mallochs John Moody Lindley Cains Moore (Italian!) Ballantyne (of Peebles) Jamieson’s of Scotland Harley of Scotland Pringle of Scotland Bryant of Scotland (defunct) Shetland Woolen Co Campbells of Beauly Bosie Drumohr (some defunct, some still exist, and of some only their vintage knitwear is really worth it) btw, i also have an uniqlo lambswool sweater from last season that i’m very happy with. I wanted a deep purple one with raglan sleeves or saddle shoulders, and almost no one else makes one like that (also got the uniqlo sweater on vinted for 15€) Do you live in Europe and use Vinted? There is so much good quality knitwear on Vinted! And Scottish knitwear is always a good call! So just type in Scotland and you will already get some good results! Ebay is used much less for clothing in Europe than in the States and the UK. Better use Vinted!

Wow thanks for that list🙏 Yeah that‘s what I figured after check ebay for a bit, not a lot of offers really. I‘ll check out Vinted and see what I find

Id mention that while vintage Pringle can be very good, the quality in the last few years has been pretty awful, so make sure you're getting an actual wool sweater!

Avoid the awful Pringle x H&M collab; the new heritage line, though, is presumably similar to the old quality but very very pricey! The Pringle x H&M collaboration is pretty easy to spot (think it mostly used synthetic materials), so it is also easy to avoid.

Different question but what do you usually wear underneath wool sweaters except for button downs? Since they‘re usually a bit itchy

undershirt

I think it's just a matter of getting used to it, but I also don't find lambswool or Shetland wool sweaters itchy, so I usually just wear a normal t-shirt underneath. When it gets colder, I sometimes wear Uniqlo's long sleeve cotton heattech shirts under the sweater.
