Looking for wool coat/overcoat options (plus blundstone question)
Hey everyone, coming into winter I’m looking to pick up a quality wool/tweed overcoat. I tried on the coat below and really really liked it, priced at $480 cdn. I had all intentions of buying it however I misremembered the material and the shell is 70% poly, 25% nylon and only 5% wool. The inner liner is 100% synthetic but I think that’s passable. I am specifically looking for higher wool content from a quality perspective and have a hard time justifying $500 for a coat that is only 5%.
1. The brand is Matinique if that matters, does this material blend/brand help justify the price. Is that normal?
2. Any similar tweed/wool coats that may be of a higher quality, more wool content/warmer and around a similar price point? I can go up 100-250 or so if it makes a huge difference but I’d rather not go any higher than that at least for this winter.
bonus blundstone question
How are they supposed to fit? I am looking at the winter thermal dress model. I have the option to go a bit more snug but there’s a very noticeable not-lined section at the heel and I’m not sure if that will wear away/eat through socks or anyone has opinions. Truthfully I also just need to try them on with some winter socks to get a good feel

look for wool overcoats on ebay
any full wool overcoat is gonna cost a fortune new cause wool costs a fortune
i would not buy that coat
Okay first off: poly gets a bad rep for not being hard-wearing. It is EXCEPTIONALLY hard wearing. If you’re gonna have an issue with polyester, take up arms against microplastics, not the longevity or perceived value of poly fabric.
2: your best bet is probably milsurp—there’s so many good options especially if you look for greatcoats (think long peacoat). They’re double breasted but imo look better, work well with multiple styles, and are just about indestructible.
I don’t necessarily have a huge problem with polyester, just that the ratio of synthetic to natural materials in that specific coat felt off compared to the price. This will quite literally be my first “multi-year” coat buy so I am certainly overthinking it and want to be 100% in my decision. I also have no experience with the brand - all that said I absolutely loved the coat but just felt that for $500 it may be missing something.
My absolute biggest concern is getting a quality coat that will last
Milsurp is the move
poly is great for outerwear but that coat looks bad imo. milsurp or secondhand wool if you don't want a milsurp vibe.
I looked at no fewer than 20 secondhand wool coats today and they were fairly pricy at about $80usd
Go secondhand
Were you looking on eBay or the depop/other online second hand?
Thanks all, @carrion is there anything specifically that sticks out as off/bad about the coat? I actually had a few compliments on it so just curious.
This was irl at secondhand markets. I quickly found as many online under $70usd shipped on eBay alone the other day.
It looks very Zara imo @swarles
hard to tell from the pics but the fabric looks wonky and not great with the buttons, length is in a weird spot (I’d prefer it either a shorter peacoat length or a longer overcoat length) and I’m personally not really into the stand collar
A couple bad pics of 100% wool $75usd overcoats I tried on today
Anian just came out with a Britannia coat, they also have herringbone.

On the fence myself, I've never bought a coat like this but at that price point for 80% wool I am very tempted !
Colors are nice. Thinking about a green one but I'd need to scout a few inspo albums
ANIÁN
The Britannia Coat
With subtle nods to the English long coat that’s rested on the shoulders of infantrymen, aviators, and explorers of yesteryear, the Britannia Coat offers modern functionality while retaining its utilitarian heritage. A material fit for purpose; the post-consumer Agnello wool outer has a weather-resistant weave that wicks water off the back and p...
Now that is it! I will likely pick that up and if I do I’ll post back and let you know what I think
Please do!
Now the question is - which color? I’m leaving between charcoal and brown for versatility. Most of my winter wardrobe is dark; dark jeans, I have one brown sweater (concerned it will clash with brown), a new pair of dark green (not olive) corduroys, and black/dark shades or neutral tshirts
also it’s 15% off for my first purchase so will def report back
This is exactly my question - I'd love to hear some input on this as well.
I was thinking about green or herringbone or blue
Plenty of blue/herringbone in inspo albums but they're diff shades

Those are really good looks. Is there a limit to how low the collar can go? I’m only 5’8 so I’m thinking the neck/collar may come down to solarplex/lower rib area 🤔
I’d definitely be a large…broad shoulders, I always have to size up
5'6 here and I hear ya. Do check out the measurements on their site - they went for an oversized fit on this one. I'm between a small and a medium myself (also broad shouldered). Not entirely sure about the collar
Seems like there’s a 1” length difference between the sizes, and I do have a good tailor that could shorten it a hair if needed. Will be purchasing and will report back to this thread when it comes in. If the only thing that needs adjusting is the length I’ll keep it and get it brought up
what color did you get in the end? im about to pull the trigger on either green/blue
Going charcoal. More versatile I think for a first coat and I just picked up a really nice pair of deep green corduroy pants specifically for winter. I’m not quite sure how I’d pull off a monochromatic winter outfit so charcoal it is
solid !
i went with green
Which size? Can’t wait to compare
Shoulda bought one for me :sadhaw:
medium!
small wouldn't clear my shoulders
it might be iffy with the layering but i had previously bought a medium coat from them, with the same shoulder size, fits me just right
the roomier chest may allow for easier layering im not sure
Anian really grinds my gears with their marketing. They recycle the biodegradable fibres but then add 20% new plastic to everything? I'm fine with polyester stuff in general, but the way Anian hits you over the head with their 'circular fashion' thing, and then explicitly does not recycle the only non-renewable part of their clothes gets to me.
I can understand how that could be frustrating. I’m not one that usually pays attention to that sort of thing however.
@semibah I should have mine delivered tomorrow so will report back
Looking forward to the fit check! Thinking I could've gone with an S myself but we'll see
Keep in mind they’re intentionally a little oversized as per the description, lots of room to layer underneath. You like it otherwise? (Assuming you’ve received it)
Haven't received it, coming in next Monday supposedly
But I'm getting paranoid over the measurements listed on the site
Shoulder width is the same as the Melton wool which I have and fits me great
But it's like 3-4 inches wider in the chest
Shorter sleeves too which is fine
Since there's no cuffs
Ahhh. Ya I compared measurements with another coat I have…it’s almost the same, within a half inch on almost all measurements except length. I’m excited
@swarles
Less green than I'd like but man the fit is everything I wanted it to be and then some
Anian just doesn't miss
Re: wilderness color
Even with high flash it's easy to miss
I got mine too! I was actually going to post a second thread about it tonight. I need the sleeves shorted like an inch but the overall length and fit is 11/10
Took it out for a test ride today and it looks awesome in natural light. I'm keeping it !
Glad to hear! I’ll be posting the thread later tonight. Mine def needs some alterations but again I do love it. Not quite cold enough here yet I don’t think
