How do you style more oversized outfits?
I've got a bit of millenial-itis and generally dress with more fitted clothing (e.g. with pants, I can grab an inch of fabric around the thigh).
1. For pants. is it still a fitted waist but looser cut, or do you get a larger waist and wear a belt. What about the length?
2. For shirts, do you get a larger size, or items that are specifically boxy fit?
3. What types of proportions are you looking at? E.g. cropped shirt, but boxy? 4. What types of outerwear do you like? What length? I know there are lots of different options, but I'm curious for a couple suggestions of specific silhouettes to go for. I have some overshirts that are a bit bigger (in terms of being longer), but I'm not sure that looks that good. At least without the rest of the outfit being similarly styled.

1. generally if the pant is designed to be wide the wait will be normal but in some cases people just size up on what may be a tapered or straight cut for the wide look
2. same as one, depends, both work size up vintage tends to be a lot cheaper but some really cool new pieces exist.
3. whatever you feel, people like a good big pant little shirt, but big pant big shirt is also great.
4. lots of outerwear can work really depends on everything else you are wearing.
5. post some pics of bigger fits you like so people can point you to things that have the same vibe. or pics of your fits if you want feedback
6.
If shirts are too long you can tuck them in
1. yes usually pants designed to be oversized will have a normal waist and a bigger leg opening, simply sizing up on normal pants will probably not give the intended look
2. i always try to find boxier cuts and then may also size up from there, really depends on how oversized you wanna go as well as what look you're going for. just don't size up on slim fit shirts, it'll not look the way you want it to.
3. cropped and boxy is fun! but don't feel like you have to pigeonhole yourself like that, play around with different lengths and proportions. that's the fun part
4. outerwear is whatever you want that suits the proportions and vibe of what you're going for
here are some of the outfits i have posted, but many other users have oversized fits in #waywt if you want more references or you don't like mine. lots of oversized pictures for reference in #inspiration as well
Looks like I came to the right place with this question - thanks for the thoughts and photos.
my answers are basically the same as the others; i'll note the type of outerwear i wear (jackets, blazers, etc) is dictated as much by the aesthetic as is by the size/oversized nature of it. the silhouette is one of many aspects to a fit to consider

1 . Get something designed to be looser & wider getting something that its not your size and its bigger is not that easy to pull off, more often than not it can look wrong, and not fit that well in different fits.
2. Same, as Im not looking to look like wearing a boyfriend shirt by just going with bigger sizes, this is ok if you can actually pull it off, some androgynous models can rock this look perfectly. the difference between this: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/b5/93/39/b593393bad46ed6b591ca06948e3cc8d.jpg and https://ae-pic-a1.aliexpress-media.com/kf/Hab28fcbb09504c7fb1685c3e502f96f4S/Shirt-Korean-versatile-Autumn-New-Korean-Fashion-Men-s-White-Shirt-Casual-Long-Sleeved-Shirts-Black.jpg_640x640Q90.jpg_.webp Honestly this is just a personal prefference, what are you looking form in terms of going away from the slim fit?
3. I just like not having tight clothes, I dont do urban fashion so not into the oversized sleeve t-shirts for ex, and also not into the cropped oversized look. I'm just avoiding the YSL uberslim look, and I like to bring balance in my body.
4. All kinds, extremely into Great Coats, Trench Coats, (specially into wool trench coats )Bomber Jackets, and also Cardigans and Ganseys. I love my great coats long and drappy. But shorter jackets such as Shackets and bomber have room in my wardove due to convenience when the weather is cold but not cold enough.
Maybe the reason you are not sure of your overshirts is because you feel like they need to fit into a particular urban oversized look, my sugestion is if that particular look doesnt work for you, then forget about it and just try to find something that you would actually want to wear.
what exactly is meant by "urban"?
big or oversized clothes are a matter of personal preference, i agree, however as the many examples in thread have shown there's a variety of styles for which an oversized shirt or pant or jacket or combination makes sense
and i don't think they should be restricted to "androgynous" individuals; armani and ralph lauren had great success in the 90s making oversized shirts and suits for men, whereas numerous brands now make oversized clothes in service of people of all gender expressions

I have not seen pictures of Armani or Ralph Lauren models wearing shirts that are several sizes bigger, oversize yes, seen plenty I even shared an example, in fact I have never seen men who were not extremely handsome pull the boyfriend shirt look, would like to see some examples.
Oh I guess you mean this: https://www.gq.com/story/vintage-armani-looks-so-cool This is designed to be loose and oversized, very different to just going to a suit store and getting a suit 3 or sizes bigger. But even then , those big jackets would not look as good outsize of those particular fits and would be very difficult to actually style outside of a very specific combo.
GQ
'90s Armani Looks Even Better Now
In the early '90s, Giorgio Armani knocked the stuffing out of the '80s power suit—and created an eternally cool uniform for right now.
This vintage Armani look great: https://media.gq.com/photos/5f0c83ebeaa2d4b281d70833/master/w_1600%2Cc_limit/hall-of-fame-armani-gq-august-2020-09.jpg Because is actually not ridiculous long, not designed to be worn by a much taller and bigger guy, just designed to leave room around the user, and give movement.
separating personal preference for streetwear or other styles or silhouettes, i think there have been plenty of examples either linked or directly posted in this thread of people wearing stuff intentionally oversized to great effect
why are you trying to explain then?
what*
i took issue with the use of "urban" as it's often a racist dogwhistle, and that only a certain segment of people can wear intentionally sized up clothes
You have seen pictures of me, do I look white to you?
I get it
there has been a missunderstanding
and its all right
I just meant to tell the op that If he is trying to explore using more oversized clothes, he needs to look for stuff that is actually designed to wear intentionally oversized not just go for bigger sizes to avoid looking like this: https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/little-kid-playing-businessman-600nw-288365096.jpg
half of these are intentionally oversized, half of these are sized up
but yes, ultimately it's a matter of personal preference. because every body is different and how every body fits clothes is different, there's a potential benefit to both approaches
Like he could go and buy stuff that is just bigger, but is he is dipping hes toes into breaking from the slim-fit millenial trauma, he needs to start from a secure place, aniway, he asked a few questions and I shared my own preference which is to go for stuff that is intentionally wider and looser, as my preference is not to buy stuff that is the wrong size even If I have done it with a couple jackets.
Great, I think you look better when you are wearing stuff like in the picture with the jeans, and the next two than when you are wearing the denim jacket, but this is my preference and if you feel like you look better with the denim jacket at the end of the day is your own style, I just think that pulling that fit is way way harder, definitively not in the territory of someone who is trying to experiment with oversized clothing and is just dipping hes toes.
