Red Light, Green Light (and the agonizing choice between them) - Topic of the day 10/17/24

You're probably not debating this about a green tracksuit but within fashion and style we're often asking "should I buy this, sell this, try this new thing (etc.)"? What factors do you consider in deciding when to act on something? What benefits or drawbacks exist to waiting to act? When do you decide to pull the trigger (metaphorically) and act? And...green light!

Purchasing is vibes based for me Idk know why I even ask for opinions I just buy what I want. There’s been so many times I ask for opinions and everyone says no and I buy it anyways. Oh and then I end up hating half the stuff I buy but I digress

I stopped buying things that I think are cool that have no place in my wardrobe And with that money, I buy the real version instead of the Cos dupe

But it really comes down to some stuff I am waiting for a sale on, and honestly if I really want it I am still excited to pull the trigger once it goes on sale just as much as I was when I saw it. Sometimes I buy impulsively though, thats more of a gamble but ditto in that if I have ideas of the fit its probably gonna work I also really don't buy a "replacement" for something I want thats cheaper as well, just shell out for the thing I want its better that way

Is there room in the wardrobe? Do I already own 3 examples of the item and i’m doing mental gymnastics to convince myself its super different when its not?

if i have something i don’t like/i don’t wear for most of a season that shits getting sold I’ve really been trying to embrace the mantra of only owning what i love and only wearing what i love and it’s made my style so much remarkably better in the past few years

I kinda do it in segments. Like this fall I’m focusing on sweaters and cardigans and next fall I plan to pick up a few jackets. I try to stick to nice basics. I was being seduced by the EK cult but I decided to take a step back from ultra-trendy stuff. I buy 2-3 garments per month and usually pull the trigger as soon as it’s dropped from my favorite brands to the states. I’m so lazy about going to the post office when I sell so I’ve become much more careful.

I tend to let things stew for a while, which sometimes makes it hard to decide when I should stop thinking about something and actually start buying instead. Though I have noticed that some of my best purchases so far were impulse buys. So maybe I should embrace that. Letting things stew with secondhand stuff is hard though, because it might sell at some point.

Yeah this is really the hard part for me. I’m either full fomo and overconsume because there’s just so many cool pieces out there or completely avoidant on purchasing anything. I want to find a middle ground but have been struggling. Any advice on how you manage this given you have the same behavior as me?

I think for me the fomo has gotten better because I feel like I already have everything I need. These days if I search for something used online I usually try to have a clear idea how much im willing to spend, what im looking for etc. If I find something that fits what im looking for but is too expensive I will send the seller a lowball and if they reject it I move on, because I already decided ahead of time how much im willing to spend. Also, the moment my budget for the month is used up I just stop looking at stuff.
