does a fishhook on a hat mean anything?
so a while ago i got this cool snapback hat that’s super fishing themed (pictured.) i was thinking about adding a fishhook clip to it to emphasize it a little more for that j’ai ne sais quoi. but then i started seeing things that say it could mean a lot worse/more inaccurate to me things than “i like fishing.” stuff about it being a racist dogwhistle?? or like an “i’m a christian” kind of thing to play off of the jesus fish imagery i guess??
would what i’m planning on doing overshadow those contexts?? are those even actual meanings of the little hat clip?? i’m agonizing a lot over $2 for this clip but i’m mostly worried i’d seem like something i’m not for doing it.

Fishhook on a fishing hat seems fine to me. If it was on a maga hat then yeah I might think it was a dogwhistle. But tbh I haven't heard of any of these connotations, only the fishhook emote which is a different thing imo
Ime it def reads fishing at the least. The connotations beyond that I think require more signals in the rest of the outfit (like American flag iconography, etc)
Idt you can avoid “I’m a fisherman” connotations with a fishhook clip on a fishing club hat lol

@lyon with the shooting/gun stuff, no matter how much I try to not run into fascists and shitbags, I often do. I’ve not once seen one of them wearing a hat with a fish hook on it. Most fishing adjacent folks I know are pretty left leaning tbh, or at the minimum just kinda love fishing and nothing else. I think people who have never actually met someone from a rural area often equate typically rural shit immediately with racism, which is prob why you’re hearing dissent on the hat lol
it's less about the hat and more about the clip! because i have seen the clip on several trump/maga hats where i'm at. i'm still trying to pinpoint exactly what it means, too because the few people i see wearing them on their trump/maga hats are people i pretty understandably don't want to talk too much to if i can help it on principle

Imo/e it’s not a dog whistle. It’s just that doing sportsmen things (hunt, fish, firearms, etc as opposed to hiking, mountain biking, trail running) is more heavily populated by alt-right folks
