Which argyle knit sweater do you think is most versatile?
I'm browsing different sweaters right now and I'm trying to figure out which is the best to buy, here are the options

here are the different ones I'm looking at rn. Right now my wardrobe is pretty basic: for pants I have most of the neutral jean colors (olive, black, light blue denim, navy, beige, burgundy/maroon) and also one pair of black trousers that I have been wearing a lot
I'm thinking that I should try to find more interesting tops: so far I have beige/tan, grey, and black sweatshirts, and a navy cableknit sweater and crewneck sweater
for shoes I have on pair of grey sneakers and one pair of black chelsea boots and that's it. I'm looking for sweater recommendations and color recommendations mainly, but shoes and pant color/type recs are also welcome
Without knowing more than the colour of your pants its hard to make a good recommendation.
What is your preferred aesthetic etc? Are you looking for a buisness casual look, streetwear, something workwear adjacent etc.
I will say that much: Argyle sweaters tend to look strange outside of specifically golfing adjacent fits. Unless you want to lean into that aesthetic you will propably find a fairisle sweater (i can recommend bosie as a brand if you are shopping new) far easier to pair if you are looking for something with a pattern.
I would also encourage you to not just think about clothes in terms of which colour they have but also consider different cuts, different rises and most importantly what aesthetics they work with.
definitely not business casual, right now I'm a university student. I haven't looked much into streetwear but I don't think that's my thing right now, I feel like I lean more towards dressing slightly more formally for class and also when I'm on campus
I was thinking of buying another cableknit jumper or a simple fairisle sweater but I was thinking that maybe I could pair one of these argyle sweaters with black trousers or burgundy jeans and it would look nice
I don't mind trying out the aesthetic, since I figured buying one wouldn't hurt and that I need to try branching out a little bit. Most of my sweatshirts and nearly all of my sweaters are from uniqlo and they are very neutral colors for the most part, so I thought more colors would be good because I find my current outfits boring, both in terms of fit and color.
in terms of daily activities and lifestyle right now, I'd say I'm more of an indoors person, I prefer dressing a little more formally, and I want to explore using more colors and textures than just grey, black, navy, beige/tan and jeans for pants respectively. I noticed I have been wearing black trousers with black chelsea boots a lot recently so I'm thinking of getting some tops that are neutrals like light pink, light blue, light green, and I don't have any corduroy or brown pants so I was thinking brown corduroy would be nice.
idk if that helps? I've seen a person wear a brown and black argyle sweater paired with black jeans and boots and I thought it worked decently so I wanted to give it a try with something similar. I'm exploring different styles right now but I haven't landed on any specific items to buy besides the argyle sweater right now
@Leo (Yakkeks) thoughts? hope the text wasn't too much
Im gonna try to get back to you this evening.
like leo said versatilty isn't just about color matching but how many different ways you can wear the same thing
I'm not suggesting this as a shopping option as Drake's is out of my (and a lot of people's!) budget, but you might be able to take a lot of inspo from their Instagram and look books https://www.instagram.com/drakesdiary?igsh=M3RsNW1hNzJxMTEw
thoughts like this are helpful; any particular reason why you didn't single out a black/brown argyle sweater amongst these others?
gotcha, yeah I imagine the argyle jumper would really have to pair with only like max 3 other colors of pants, and most likely would pair best with black trousers or something like that which would give a more formal vibe
will do! I've heard people say tyler the creator also is cool
"best" is a subjective quality imo
to paraphrase '7 habits of highly effective people' it's helpful imo to start with the end goal ie 'who/what do you want to look like'
hm. I thought that black/brown would be fine, but I was thinking more generally I see that a lot of better styled photos with people wearing argyles are the sweater on top and then pants matching one of the argyl colors on bottom, I wanted to experiment.
have you found any inspiration pictures, either of people wearing argyle or people in general with a style that you think is cool and could see yourself wearing?
(posting them would help; check #waywt or #inspiration or IG or pinterest if you're looking for pics)
I also just thought the black argyle I posted above would pair well with black trousers, and that the navy, blue and tan one I posted first would pair well with khakis, light wash jeans I have, or navy chinos/dark blue denim
in a vacuum that might be true - it's worth thinking about the other components of the outfit (undershirt, shoes, accessories) and context which you've given
but that's less impactful imo then either a) seeing actual pictures of people making the attempt of b) making the attempt yourself by either trying or buying things
my personal and subjective opinion is i like 3, 5 and 6, thought all three have the same potential pitfall where they can become the focus on an outfit
yeah, for undershirt I was thinking I have black or white crew neck tshirts so I can just put that, for shoes I only have a pair of grey sneakers and a pair of black chelsea boots so I'm more limited there, don't have accessories really besides a small metal chain I can wear around my neck, and the context would be going to school (uni classes)
if you're okay with that, fine, but if not/you're looking for more versatility it might be worth considering other options - in either case that is my personal and subjective opinion as one person on the internet, which is less important than your own opinion
and in general, text-based advice/commentary is less helpful than actually seeng the pictures of the items/fits/inspo
your mental image of 'gray sneakers' might differ from mine or someone else's, for example
for three what if I put on khaki pants or black trousers and boots, wouldn't that fit decently?
I was thinking I'd wear dark blue denim for #5, and for #6 I have a pair of burgundy pants, black trousers again, and khakis
yeah let me find it
the sneakers look very similar to this
I think I'll probably still buy an argyle knit sweater for fun but I think it would be good to branch out to more versatile items, maybe like a pair of white shoes? or some other pants or tops. I definitely want to get a pair of brown trousers since I don't have any brown in my wardrobe right now
what would you recommend? another person I talked to before recommended a suede jacket, dunno what you'd think of that
looking for some inspo rn, will post pics
from uniqlo: I thought this looked decent, I liked the overall neutral/brownish look. Was thinking that I could get brown trousers from uniqlo for this reason + a beige top? could also replace the brown jacket with a cardigan if I feel like that
from the women's example, burgundy undershirt also goes well
I haven't found any outfits that I really like yet, the above outfit in all brown is like a 7/10 for me, it's solid but not extremely interesting
bullet points as i set out for work:
- i support buying fun things if they spark joy; that can be a function independent of color based versatility
- if you're concerned about buying mindfully as you explore the best thing you can do is have a clear vision. - feeling 7/10 is a good start but if that doesn't inspire you to buy it's worth looking further
- the recs and options of things like boots or suede jackets or brown jackets are okay but again, tough without actual pics
- this can be hard and time consuming but that's okay because you have time (unless you explicity need an argyle sweater for a function today)
in addition to sourcing inspo these might be good reads if you have time https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1259539428930621561 https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1285631353433624739
also this on a broader level https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1248233800757018634
Yeah I agree, I think I just want a new type of sweater to add a kind of statement piece I guess. I did say that I feel 7/10 about the brown jacket and trousers outfit but I feel 10/10 about getting brown trousers, since I think those will pair well with a lot of things. For the suede jacket I can find a pic, but now I'm thinking more broadly I should try to get some outerwear that will pair well with casual, semi casual, and more formal wear. I already have a navy Lacoste jacket which I will try to find a pic for, so maybe a black blouson/brown blouson/ black fleece jacket would work to pair with any other outfits?
Here's the suede jacket someone else was recommending
The blue jacket I have look very similar to this
to reiterate - you do not need to make any decisions right this second and my opinions are not absolutes
your color sense in general is good
the general outfit ideas and pickups are fine; they're standards for a reason
if you feel strongly about brown pants start shopping, try them on, get the tangible experience with them, and then go from there
speculation and theory crafting is great! at some point the abstract '[a] goes with [b]' is less impactful than actually seeing or trying these things out
and with that i've actively got to work so if i don't immediately respond ***or have a long reply that's why 🫡 there's a lot of good things to read back upthread and i encourage doing that 👍
I was just reading the discussion on versatility that you linked and am thinking about what you said about versatility can be thought of in terms of within the existing aesthetic or across multiple aesthetics. I think right now I'm in the early stages of exploring multiple aesthetics, but I feel I have a preference towards wearing trousers and slightly more formal clothing than say sweatpants and sweatshirts, so I'm going to keep going in this direction, and I think for now I'm not really thinking of versatility across multiple aesthetics
keep looking for inspo
searching on #waywt for posts from people like jake, dexcam, art (artvandelayimporting), ethan (sioku), ayoqna, and to a degree people like me (zeometer), smiles (smiiles), char (sharloy), and bishop (bishopcorrigan)
Also on versatility, I was thinking I could get a pair of shoes other than my current black Chelsea boots and I'm trying to figure out a good color and style. I am just looking for something that looks good with any combination of clothes that black boots don't look good with, so I'm thinking maybe white shoes would be good
The pseudo scarf thing you did with the striped pants? Trousers? was pretty cool 😄
Im gonna say this again. clothes are not about only colour! ^^
Black derbies or loafers for example would give very different vibes from black chelseas. So try to add that to the consideration when looking for shoes 🙂
True lol, I think I have focused a lot on color matching and not so much on shape or fit generally. I have mostly gone for a more relaxed fit on my pants since I think I have wide leg trousers, and I generally have more loose fitting sweaters as well
Haven't even properly thought about pairing derbies or loafers with my current wardrobe, good food for thought ❤️
Are another kind of like white boots or something a thing? I was going to ask you what you think color and shape wise for shoes would work given my current wardrobe
text based descriptions are less helpful than pictures
even if it takes more time or effort it can eliminate ambiguity for anyone reading and electing to respond
Hm will keep that in mind, I was just imagining something like this
I wouldn't mind a style of shoe that's white besides boots though, thoughts Leo?
I could also just make permutations of all the different top and bottom matches I can make and keep a list of good ones and imagine which outfits won't match well with black Chelsea boots and grey sneakers I guess
White is a slightly unusual shoe colour outside of sneakers. Plenty of white sneakers around, with the main consideration being how minimal and how chunky/slim you want to go. There are some white boots that mostly look similar to doc martens and some niche cowboy boots, but its mostly an unusual colour in leather shoes.
There are also white bucks (the white shoes sioku/the teenage gentleman wore this summer in plenty of fits) that might be fun but these are kind of hard/expensive to get new. Also have some very specific oldtimey class connotations. No clue how thriftable they are though.
Sioku/the teenage gentleman has a blog and i think he writes about them on occasion. Try using the search feature with "bucks"

In general the bloog is well worth a read, even if you are not into vintage traditional menswear.
I think at this point I want to get a white sneaker, and that white bucks might be a bit more formal than what I'm looking for, but I don't want to buy a white chuck taylor all star or white air force ones. I think a shoe like the axel area arigato in white would look nice, but the price tag is a bit high for me (axel area arigato shoe above)
what would you guys recommend?
this would also be nice, but it's still a bit pricey for me
search for "white sneakers" in:questions-and-advice
many, many people have asked about white sneakers before and given their input because there's many options out there
it's best to find a shoe you like and that fits, then worry about the price
those are both fine, they're like a chunkier reebok club c, but again, plenty of options out there worth looking into
gotcha, will do. thanks for all of the helpful resources! I feel like I'm figuring out my style more actively again
not a problem! it's just like life, you've gotta figure out how to crawl and balance on your feet before you go off running
it can take time (or not), you may make mistakes (or not) but it's a part of the process
Yeah. I think its importand to view fashion as a lifelong journey and take your time.
small update: I ended up getting two argyle knits, a pair of navy trousers, a pair of beige trousers, 1 pair of wide leg brown chinos, and 1 beige and 1 olive crew neck sweater 👍 the exploration continues
