Microphone sounds very Bass forward in recordings.

I just listened to a playback of my recording and the bass is just insanely aggressive to me. But when Im editing filters and I have the monitor mode on, I dont hear it. I think I sound pretty good during the monitoring playbacks. What could be causing this?

Having a bassy voice, proximity effect from being too close to the mic, aggressive EQ/compression filter settings

You are correct. I have recorded myself speaking with all filters on, and then turning them off one by one. It appears to be the compression filter but I cant seem to figure out what part of it is causing it. I have adjusted the gain a bit, but other than that no setting Ive changed seems to be having any positive results

Band 4 Band -20 Attack 5 Release 70 As we can tell, Im new to this. I dont know what any of these settings do. These settings were selected with the help of someone on reddit offering to help me set up the microphone via live stream. They joined me in a stream and made suggestions based off what they heard.

oh yikes yeah multiband comp basically applies different compressors to different frequencies of your EQ which means you're just compressing your low end, causing the boominess I'd just swap the reaper comp for the built-in OBS one tbh

or if you want to use the reaper stuff just use the normal compressor and not the multi band

See the person helping me did not explain any of this, I mean they did but in a very very basic Explain like Im 5 type of way. I just did what they told me to do. Okay so then how would I translate the needed compression settings to the normal compressor? Im not sure what is supposed to be at or how to identify what I NEED it to be at. Again, VERY new to all this. Trying to figure it out but not doing a great job

Thank you both, Ill go check it out and come back to update how it goes/close the thread I have reached a point in his video that I've often wondered is part of my overall audio issues. He instructs you to turn off all filters, and adjust your audio interface so that your dB sits around -12 to -16. He says this will be very low on my interface, but my interface doesn't pick up my voice unless it's at a 9 or higher. Do I have a poor interface for my microphone? I'm using the Euphoria UMC204HD with the Shure MV7+. I have to always have my interface on high and then add a gain filter so my levels get to about -12/-16

the farther away you are from your mic the more gain you will need. so normal start with the mic 3 inches or so from your mouth (a fist distance) and try to lock yourself in that area. Then set the gain based on that distance should need less gain especially if you are further.

Sounds like the 204HD just doesn’t have enough gain for the mic, then. Unless you have a need for the interface I’d just use the MV7 over USB, the interface is not doing the mic a service here Or yeah you’re too far away potentially

Yeah it does typically sit anywhere between 4 and 6 inches away, I can adjust it and give that a go. Ill also look for a more powerful audio interface or just grab a cloud lifter to give me a boost. Thanks!

it looks further away from the bit I saw on your stream so just double check the distance also make sure you are pointing the mic at your mouth and not the ceiling. but I would also try what addie mentioned about see how it is without the interface if the distance and mic positing dont work. no needto spend money if you dont need too

yeah ill mess around with distance and position and see how it goes for a day or so and move along from there. Thanks!
