Keeping chunks simulated for player farms

Hello, I'm wondering what the possibilities are for things like keeping chunks permanently loaded/simulated for things like automatic farms on a server? Are there plugins or server commands that can do this? And if so, what are the potential performance impacts? Is this even a good idea? I just realise that automatic farms are kinda useless unless you're within simulation distance the entire time, which limits their use for players on a server, and I'm wondering what if anything people do regarding this

A lot of technical players will use player built chunk loaders to handle this type of thing as well. depending on the farm it can cause performance issues as the farm would then be permanently running(unless the player builds a way to shut it off) then meaning that it could lag your server a lot if its storage gets full or has to many entities, etc.
