How do I reduce the load on the server?

I made a Minecraft server with my girlfriend so it's just the two of us. It's vanilla minecraft running on an old laptop I have set up as a server and sometimes the game ticks stop. Right now I lowered render distance but I want to know what else can I do so the experience is smoother. I'm open to installing mods or plugins or whatever as long as it's just for performance. Thank you!

Hey, I'd recommend you move to PaperMC, or Fabric with some optimisation mods such as Lithium You can usually just replace the vanilla server jarfile with the lithium / fabric one. They have better perf than vanilla
Fabric
Fabric
The home of the Fabric mod development toolchain.
Modrinth
Lithium - Minecraft Mod
No-compromises game logic/server optimization mod

Can vouch for fabric It’s great I like it more than paper Also pregen And make sure you have at least a ssd (nvme or not) installed so it would be able to load faster Would probably make the experience a lot more pleasant
