Thrifting tipps for black turtleneck sweaters [EU-Based]

Hi everyone! Im looking to get a relatively thin black turtleneck sweater for layering under jackets in fall. Given how ubiquitious that stuff is I thought I would try thrifting for it. Do you guys have any tipps what brands to look out for in a quality turtleneck when thrifting.

What material do you want the turtleneck to be made of? cotton, wool, cashmere? And do you want it to be a thin or chunky sweater?

Ralph Lauren make a relatively thin, wool turtleneck, which I wouldn't pay anything like retail for, but should be out there for thrifting easy enough

Preferably wool, cotton is fine as well, don't really see the need for cashmere. Preferably something thin for layering under a jacket etc.

The best thinner wool sweater I have is a Beams Plus one. I'm sure they makde a turetleneck but harder to thrift as a brand. Still worth keeping an eye out for.

i’d go for a vintage one by a scottish maker, this list might be helpful: Gleneagles Kintyre Hawico Peter scott Johnstons of elgin Mcgeorge ! Duncan cameron Colhay’s Robert Scott Lochcarron (of Scotland) John Laing Alan Paine Glenmac Hogg of hawick Hawick McKenzie ! Scott & Charters Turner Rutherford Cordings Barrie Braemar Murray Allan Glenmuir Douglas Page Glen Lyon Kinross William Lockie John Moody Lindley Cains Moore Ballantyne (of Peebles) Pringle of Scotland Bryant of Scotland Campbells of Beauly Laurence J. Smith Drumohr cashmere turtlenecks are super nice, though, especially as a layer underneath a jacket! and vintage ones are usually very cheap!

Thats really useful! Black turtlenecks are a dime a dozen, but good ones are somewhat harder to find.. I will see what I can find. Perhaps i stumble across a nice cashmere one and thats that then 😄

cashmere is also relatively easy to dye without damaging it; last year i dyed a cream cashmere sweater navy

agree; it seems, though, that some of their new items are once again made in scotland perhaps there was another change of ownership? my favourite is a crewneck cashmere sweater by alan paine! soo nice! 👌 i can also really recommend sellpy for vintage knitwear https://www.sellpy.de/

Nice, gonna give that a try then! Surprising amount of Alan Paine on there. Do you have any experience with merino whool as well? Found a nice one that might fit the bill but its light blue so I might try dyeing it black

yeah, both Alain Pain and Peter Scott are very common! I‘d try to look for their old sweaters that were still made in England. While Alan Paine still exists all their items are now made abroad. no idea; but i’d guess it would work similarly!
