Fashion NPCs - Topic of the day 8/25/24
How do you feel about Fashion NPCs (positive, negative, neutral)? What exactly is a fashion NPC and why does it tend to involve the use of Comic Sans? Are there any specific clothes or visual indicators that make up "NPC style" or is this just a new way to criticize someone's clothes? If the latter, how do you respond to that sort of criticism?

who cares lol
incredibly negative term
the terms "npc" and "bot" suck and are dehumanizing and if you use them I am actively judging you(:
unless one uses it sarcastically to describe themselves then its funny
the term is dumb
ok im glad everybody else is on the same page as me lol stupid ass term
and also nonsensical? an npc in zelda is gonna be different from one in the sims
Just to spell it out and answer the question, I think there are several levels for why the term is terrible.
1- Judging someone's personality based on clothes (in this case an implication that the "npc" is a boring, unimportant person) is superficial at best and something I would like to not be a part of. Implying that the "main character" (usually oneself) is inherently better is an awful way to live
2- implying that "boring" fashion is inherently inferior is not a good mindset, imo. Its just preference.
3- I wonder if some would claim they use this term to describe people "in the game" but who stick to unadventurous styles. Do you judge people who are not in the style game to begin with like this? If someone tries and fails to reach what you consider the goal, is this justification to dehumanize them?
Overall- incredibly negative term and one which speaks volumes about the person using it, if serious
calling yourself a fashion NPC unironically also has unfortunate implications imo
if your clothes are basic just say that; like s said you shouldn't feel obligated to dress in an interesting way if it's not to your taste on any given day
people may judge you but people will find a reason to judge you anyway, you just have to be content with your own choices
The concept that you can know a person in any meaningful way from only the person’s appearance is a fallacy that frequently underlies unjust treatment, of individuals and beyond.
Sorry for getting a little deep on a weekend morning
a different topic (this ones solved anyway) but that's exactly why the advice/argument that people should dress based on their "lifestyle" is fucking dumb lmao.
Its such a fucking stupid term and I hate it so much. Re appropriating right wing memes but 'fashion' is mad
As a corrolary if you catch yourself thinking you are the Main Character, you're a prick
If you use these terms you are a massively insecure baby
counterpart: a "let's go brandon" or "blue lives matter" shirt is sufficient for me to judge imo
but i do agree in general, assigning a judgment of whether someone is impactful or not based on their choice of clothes is goofy
I've only seen zoomers say the word bot for like, trash talking someone in NBA 2k games lol. I never knew people used it out of that context for stuff like this
Im a fashion npc
do you have a quest for me?
fashion npc
He put on his robes and wizard hat
You know I do keep giving people quests but they’re not fashion related so idk if that makes me a fashion npc or just a fashionable npc
personally i’ve been using the term “palette swap” when referring to a type of outfit i wear that is repeated often and looks consistently similar
Lemme just save that to my inspo folder...
Anyway, calling someone other than yourself a fashion npc is a red flag.
If you wanna bitch about bland outfits just do it in a way thats not demeaning to other ppl.
There’s also an inequality and social dark side to the popular npc memes
Frankly calling other ppl npcs in general is a red flag
In college the most popular shoe was Airforce 1’s but only a specific group of people were called basic for Wearing it.
Everyone wore them, I don’t understand why people make a psycho social analysis of someone wearing Air Force ones or new balances or doc martens
You pretty much get issued a pair of AM95's at birth here, same thing
that’s why i lean away from it!
like yes. a popular, easy to style shoe like af1s or nike dunks are popular cuz they are good!
Bringing video game terminology into the real world is some real mouth breather shit imo. The idea that fashion can be at all correlated to someone’s viability as a living human being is so ridiculously fucked up.
the more i think about it i think using video game terms is silly and it should be treated as such! a silly lighthearted way to describe things (unfortunately it isn’t that)
