Occasional high MSPT
Hey, all.
Performance is typically great, but I've been having occasional high MSPT spikes. Can anyone more familiar with spark help me figure out what is causing these spikes?
Thank ya

These are not magic values. Many of these settings have real consequences on your server's mechanics. See this guide for detailed information on the functionality of each setting.
✅ Your server isn't lagging
Your server is running fine with an average TPS of 19.

Got any datapacks or command blocks?
I do have the following data packs
Balanced woodcutter
NoEnchantBlock
Tectonic
Vanillarefresh
No command blocks, though
Have you pregenerated
World border is 20k. We have pregenerated out to 12k, but the vast majority of the time the server has no hiccups generating chunks beyond that
We have a small player base. Generating chunks typically causes no issues, but recently we've been getting these small spikes where MSPT is showing <50 but TPS <20
Try find plugin alternatives for your datapacks
datapacks are using up 5% of your server thread

use spark with /spark profiler --only-ticks-over 50
Check out eternity’s guide
about to suggest this ^^
wait no
use spark with /spark profiler --only-ticks-over 51
Will do. Didn't know this was a thing
don’t do 50, do 51 as said here
doesn't matter at all
Oh
9900k
50 can catch normal ticks
Hetzner?
50 with avg 12 isnt normal
??
yes but only ticks over at 50 means it can catch normal ticks that aren’t laggy whereas 51+ catches actual lag ticks
I don’t care about their current perf
yeah
we want a spark with actual laggy ticks
Have it running. I'll send a link once we experience another spike
 thanks
For me it actually looks like a host issue
For now
We'll see
We use Winternode. Been very happy with performance for the past year so I'm not sure
Can u send link please, i'll take a look

Flowing water is causing lag spikes??
flowing liquids yes
If it's moving - yes
Check if there's any tsunami machine or smth
What's the location of the server?
Would new world generation with Tectonic cause spikes in flowing water well over what vanilla experiences?
Chicago
it’s possible
partially pregenerating isn’t ideal
if you have a worldborder at 20k, you realistically should pregen 20k
Yuuuuuup. I'll have to pregen some more while players are offline, then

I need to run some test to confirm that this isn't cpu issue
like on hetzner 9900k
Because on my experience going from i9 9900k to 7950x3d lowered mspt by two times
Hmm. I can reach out to Winternode to see what they have to say, too
yeah well it’s almost as if the 9900k has a very different single thread score than the 7950X
I know ofc, but, why use old intel burning cpus when there's something more performant and efficient
well
9900ks aren’t great yeah but they’re far better than the likes of Xeons
for small servers it’s usually fine
for bigger servers you’d likely want something better
Understandable, but not for such a price
My mistake, that's their main project
Jesus that’s ridiculous
I hope that I'll be able to make some servers in the US someday
enviro is better than this for the US 😭 like wtf you can get a 7600 for $1/gb
OR intel i9 9900k
well yeah that’s for EU but at least it’s cheaper than WinterNode LOL
I'm assuming this is with limited vcores?
Unlimited = high CPU steal time
you get 200% (2vcores) with enviro but you can make a ticket to get it increases to 400% for free
which cause lag spikes a lot
I've been using winternode for around a year and this is the first time I've ever had lag spikes despite the lack of vcore limit
I think I probably benefit from the additional cores for chunk loading more than it hurts mspt for my use case
how many do you get?
vCores ^
oh
they give fair usage :/
You know that if you use 1 thread of any core that no one else uses, it will load ALL core, not a half
Yeah, I get what you're saying but what matters more than the nitty gritty in this case is the user experience which I've been more than happy with. Looks like I'll go ahead and pregen to world border overnight now that we've figured it out
Thanks for the help guys
