An over shirt jacket for cocktail attire?
I will be attending a company event where the dress code is "Cocktail Attire", I currently don't own any outerwear that are suitable for formal events and saw that there's a sale going on at Uniqlo for this overshirt.

I'm planning to buy the brown one and wear it with a turntleneck, black trousers and boots.
Would this work?

Its difficult to say as dress codes have become very casualized over time and by now cocktail attire can mean a lot of things. Derek guy in this thread gives a good overview over what was traditionally understood under the term:

Again: I don't know how casual your company is, I would ask the person in charge what their understanding of cocktail attire is.
That being said, unless your company is super casual and does not understand what cocktail attire is a shirt jacket would propably be too informal. Same with most boots. I would recommend at least a sport coat/blazer personally.

Let's talk about this because you may get invited to a party this holiday season that calls for "cocktail attire." What is cocktail attire? And how can you do it well? 🧵

A sleaker Chelsea type boot could work, especially in black. Like Leo, I think that jacket is probably too casual.
Cocktail attire usually means blazer at minimum
Yeah the dictionary definition is either a suit in a dark color, or a conservative blazer/slacks combo. You’ll probably want a tie and a pocket square as well.
However, as Leo pointed out, dress codes are flexible these days. Is there anyone who works with the event who’s available to answer your questions?
