[Fabric 1.21.0]Fabric Server Crashes

So I'm running a small server for my friends with Fabric as my server-jar and its just turning off randomly and not leaving any crash logs. It auto restarts but things are sometimes lost or duplicated in these moments. Is there a strategy to troubleshoot/diagnose this issue? The console logs show nothing abnormal

Are you using a web panel of any sorts or docker

Debian + SSH via windows terminal

how much ram does the server have (not mc server, the OVH server itself)
DataWitch
DataWitchOP6mo ago
4gb on the server

if you run uptime what do you see on ssh ^ Right so: It’s possible your entire OS is encountering an OOME or out of memory exception where it kills everything to conserve memory. 4GB of ram is not enough to run a 1.21 fabric server as well as the OS itself. Are you using OVH with the free token things? Or are you paying?

11 days uptime I'm paying

OVH has god awful performance

to be clear the fabric server is running like simple voice chat and a handful of server-side mods

How much out of interest? don’t have to share

let me see 13.46/mo I used OVH back in the day for hosting my servers and didn't hit any issues but that was a longgggg time ago

13.46/month for 4GB???? that’s insane You’d be better off using a shared host (make a post in #marketplace with what you’re running, how many players and your budget). You will get better performance for likely cheaper, and shouldn’t encounter the issues you are experiencing 13.46/month is actually ridiculous Minecraft often gets less performant as new versions release

Yeah, I used creeperhost back in the day (i think it was that) and I just got my entire server deleted during a databreach and they just said sorry 1 month credit our b 🤪 after deleting all my worlds/projects So I've been paranoid about using community oriented hosts which is why I went to OVH again but I will def check out marketplace now that you've shared the light w/me

Creeper is not very good. Enviro, Bloom, ServCity, Lilypad, WinterNode and Birdflop are very reputable Don’t use shockbyte, bisect or apex

Cool will look into it appreciate the help! I'll find and pivot to another host today and see if that resolves the issues

Budget will usually be fine If you scroll further down you see the differences You won’t need dedicated How many players do you have @DataWitch? (Playing at once)
DataWitch
DataWitchOP6mo ago
I've had nearly 8 on at once before, might be growing that to 10 soon
Skullians
Skullians6mo ago
I’d say you’re looking at maybe 5-6GB 6 to be safe So that’s $6/month for enviro budget which should be perfect If you really need the performance do premium
𝒟𝑜𝓂𝒾𝓃𝒾𝒸
budget = shared hardware, usually slower cpu/ram (worse hardware) to be cheaper, but also slower premium = shared hardware, faster hardware, but more expensive dedicated = you get a physical server to yourself, you may use all the performance, but very expensive
Skullians
Skullians6mo ago
^^ well dedicated is dedicated hardware but not a dedicated server afaik. It’s not a VPS or anything it’s still a panel that you get given access to But enviro’s budget hardware is very good for price

we play with shaders and ive been trying to keep view distances up on the higher end upwards of 16 chunks. What specs are best to facilitate that? (pre-generated all the chunks in my worldborder with chunky so its not making new terrain just loading and streaming it)
Skullians
Skullians6mo ago
16 is very high especially with 10 players. Consider moving the view and sim distance further down in server.properties, and get a mod like distanthorizons or Bobby if you want to see further 10 view 8 sim may be better, 8 view 6 sim preferably If you’re wanting to stick with 16 view and sim serverside you should be looking at premium plans

DataWitchOP6mo ago
Yeah I attempted to run the distant horizons server side thing at one point but obviously that's very resource intensive since it generates LOD data on the servers processor
Skullians
Skullians6mo ago
No, distant horizons should be on the client Then as you explore the server world distant horizons will store the data and render it as LOD when far away you don’t use DH or Bobby on the server
DataWitch
DataWitchOP6mo ago
Yeah it was so buggy with its experimental server side LOD processing i was forced to that conclusion
Skullians
Skullians6mo ago
mhm… just keep it on the client, or use Bobby on the client if you don’t like DH

Do the mods/plugins that claim to lower server-distance based on TPS actually do anything?
Skullians
Skullians6mo ago
Yes. https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/dynamic-view-fabric/files is fantastic for this. Particularly for simulation distance, which is how far entities and whatnot are loaded around the player, dynamically decreasing / increasing it depending on server performance can help a lot

Good to know! Yeah something to note with my current server/world is most of us stick to the same area where we've been building a lot of things so the render distance being higher hasn't yet become an issue keyword yet

as long as you’re running lithium and whatnot you should be fine lol
