What are the pros and cons of self-hosting?

Hi all, my friend recently sent me a DM saying that he had a 12GB i7 computer that he wasn't using, and that I could buy it off of him for a little bit of money. I've been using Pebblehost to host a private server that I'm thinking of taking public this fall, and the servers starting to get more and more expensive to pay for as it needs more resources, so this really got me thinking about self-hosting, whether I buy that computer off of my friend or buy another one. It would make much more sense. What are the pros and cons of self-hosting? What would I have to worry about that my server host already covers, and what are some tips that anybody could give me? I don't know much about port forwarding or really anything network related, and would I have to worry about DDOS attacks on my home router if I self-hosted? I just want to know if self-hosting would be a good solution for me or not. Thanks!

you need a smooth reliable 500 mpbs fibre link and a good geographic location imo to begin entertaining self-host as an option if so though you basically just need a static IP address and just need to get handy with working with a firewall and should be good to go you will get better results (better performance on a bare linux terminal only install, a fancy panel) etc once you refine your sysadmin skills

I can do all that, I just want to make sure I'm safe to self-host without my home network being unsafe.

Who the fuck said you need 500mbps that is bullshit You’d need maybe 20-50 max !selfhost

Home hosting has its drawbacks / caveats
- Is your internet connection fast enough? In both directions (around 50M is usually enough; you should check here)? You don't connect the server to your router via WiFi, do you? - Does your ISP provide a somewhat static, public, IPv4 address? - Are you aware and able to deal with the security impliations? - Is your computer powerful enough to run both a client and a server? - Does any inhabitant (human or not!) mind the noise, heat and energy cost of a machine running 24/7? - Alternatively, is your playerbase OK with the server not being there when you aren't?

depends on the amount of players you go through i use 400 mpbs regular weekend peak this realistically probably needs a PLAN !plan or was it pleb !pleb

yea but once it's offloaded to TCPShield in my case it doesn't become extra bandwidth
