Favorites Series: Sweaters - Topic of the day 7/26/24
It's the middle of July which makes it the perfect time to talk about sweaters. :xd: What are your favorite sweaters of all price points? What brands have been less than stellar? What neckline do you prefer (crew, v-neck, cowl, something else)? What do you look for in a sweater (fabric, thickness, any additional functions)?
The Favorites Series is part of a ~weekly recurring TOTD to replace/updated the 5 year old "Best X for $X" threads on r/mfa.

Someone somewhere here or in another fashion Discord said some shit about cashmere and merino wool and them being less and less valuable / as buzzwords
and while I agree, it's worth saying that The Good Stuff is really fucking good and you should try to seek highly texture-variable garments like this out in-person as much as you can to feel them
insert meme about the feeling it between your fingers and saying something insufferable
but like potter stewart said about obscene content, I know it when I see it
if you've felt Good Cashmere, you know how soft and warm it can be and that fucking rocks, and the itchy scratchy junk shit sweaters are devastating after feeling it
Sweaters are probably my favorite category of clothing. Generally, I look at texture first, then cut, but I've been trying to move toward the second more, looking at more cropped sweaters.
Most of mine are from roberto collina or isabel benenato
The former you can get really cheap secondhand or like $50-75 on sale
looove sweaters
I think patterned sweaters are the GOAT
Love lookin like a dorky prof
Any recommendations for Good cashmere?
entirely depends on what you want (thickness, warmth, etc)
it's gonna all honestly depend on each specific piece
maybe that means you've got the scratch to stack your wardrobe with Brunello Cucinelli in an appropriate climate
maybe it means you have one splurge Thom Browne gray cardigan for fall in New York
I think what ppl generally expect out of cashmere is warm, soft, and light, plus the bonus of literally being expensive, so the TB cardi feels like the typified cashmere to me
I found a Johnstons of Elgin one for cheap on ebay last year and it is easily the nicest feeling thing I own
I have a Rick Owens island sweater that's light and tight and warm enough to wear on skin alone in 55F or so and still be toasty, and it weighs about the same as or less than a medium cotton tee
as far as places of origin, Scotland seems to have a leg up here for good wool/cashmere sweaters on average among their available selection
Mostly because of Johnstons I think! They produce cashmere stuff for a lot of the designer brands too
TIL!
I went on a bit of a sweater spree last winter. My favorites are the Xenia Telunts fisherman sweater, Manresa Oysterman, Auralee shaggy cardigan (cool color and texture irl doesn't come out in picture), and Needles Mohair star cardigan.
Goes without saying the shetland is a classic. But they are a bit boring so I didn't put them in my favories. I have a yellow J Press shaggy dog, Brown brushed harley of scotland, and a green howlin'
I have bought so many sweaters this summer
Wanna shout out graphic sweaters as well
PRL polo bear for example
Easy way to add interest to an outfit
Also plentiful on the used market. Also would absolutely consider that while wool is the warmest, if you are gonna spend most of your day inside or live in a temperate climate cotton may be more useful
And you can wear cotton over a tank/short sleeves
Also really like my ALD sweater cause it's got holes in it. Love a lot of basketcase's graphic work on their sweaters. PRL bear as said.
I've actively tried not to but oh man did i wanna
idk i could be wrong but a sweatshirt and a sweater are two different things in my mind. usually a sweatshirt is cotton and then sweaters are your wools, cashmeres, etc
Im a turtleneck kinda enby
but im really struggling to make sweaters work for me. The amount of days where it is cold enough for me to need a sweater under my jacket are kinda limited.
My grail is the JJVE worn here by Pesty. But I might settle for some cheaper version this fall
That Auralee number 🤌🏽
I have a cotton and a wool Xenia Telunts and I wear them so much.
Similarly a story mfg cotton sweater with a cat on that is basically a polo bear in a sillier pattern, it's great.
Im away from home but pretend I flexed by posting my Visvim :xd:
(I equally love a dirt cheap all wool fisherman jumper I got in a charity shop)
i am excited for the weather to turn cold so i can wear this Shetland i got from @LeisurelyLoafing
uniqlo's 100% lambswool sweaters are also great as a basic layer; thin enough to layer without overheating, warm enough to be comfortable, i wear mine basically year round
FWIW his diffusion line O Project makes 100% wool sweaters in similar cuts, they’re not quite as nice as the JJVE sweaters but they’re still quite good
These knits are both O Project, occasionally come up used for <$100 USD
I was eyeing the Norwegian sweater I got in exchange today. Can’t wait for sweater weather
my arms are too long for my sweaters i need new ones
Damn you MFAD. I just went down the eBay sweater rabbit hole again
I love sweaters. My current favorites are my Scott & Charters cardigan and my Kanata cowichan. Both are very cozy, but I definitely will acquire many more sweaters in this lifetime.
Sweaters are great for summer too! I have a linen and a silk blend one I love
post wtf
i wanna see
While I'm finally getting comfortable tucking in my shirts, sweaters are/were a great way to feel like I looked neater (I'm not on the sweater-tucking trend though). Cardigans are fun, but if I pick the wrong one I get the professor comments due to the white in my beard. I don't mind it, but it's interesting where you see age pop up
Like my other clothes, I've started paying a lot more attention to weight/material, so I've got different seasonal sweaters, and it keeps things easy
I have yet to find the Polo Bear sweater (outside of the $$$$ Yankees) that I truly want, but I do want one. Popped one off ebay one time and it wound up being too small. A clear casualty of someone's dryer.
Also had some ebay tragedies clearly caused by hangers
Haha I bet I can put a fit together with da scribbly fatigues
