Minecraft server hosting service

Hi, I want to start a Minecraft survival server with friends, running fabric with some slight server-side modifications (like carpet mod). We have been using free hosting services like Aternos and Falix Nodes in past servers and it is just not enough. Performance is terrible, as expected. That's why I'm creating this post. I need help choosing a hosting service. We require something that fits this conditions: - The server will have around 5 active members and 10 total members, which most of the times only 3 people will be online at once, maybe more, and sometimes bot players (this is an estimation based on past servers). - There will be farms running on the server, some might be very resource intensive and capable of generating thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of items per hour. - Be able to comfortably run at 16 render distance. My budget is around 10 euros a month. Currently I'm testing, in a creative world, Hetzner's CX32 plan (8 euros a month), which has 8GB of RAM and 4 VCPUs. The Minecraft server is running with 6GB of RAM. Performance mods, like lithium, are installed. I've been messing around with it and it's already much better than free hosting services, but it still seems to not have the greatest performance. Chunk generation could be faster, I have been flying forward with an elytra with a friend and sometimes it can't keep up. When running farms like nash's stacking raid farm the MSPT goes up to like 45, which I believe shouldn't. I've been told that I do not need 6GB of RAM for this conditions and that the CPU from this Hetzner plan ins't very good, that there are alternatives with better value for the money. I got recommended Pebblehost's Minecraft premium plan with 4GB of RAM. I would like to hear your guys opinions and recommendations. Sorry if I did not provide enough information, tell me if you need more. Feel free to ping me. Thanks!

should always pregen !pregen well, pregen with chunky

I have not tested this Hetzner plan in a real situation (actual survival server). So I don't know how it would behave Pregenerating chunks would only make the area around spawn not really a problem. Also it would only affect the start of the server.

why would it only affect the start of the server? generating new chunks produces a lot of lag even on beefy servers
ProGamingDk
ProGamingDk•7mo ago
"around spawn" if 10k out in each direction is around spawn (10k is what is normally recommended) then sure

uh shouldnt this be redirected to #marketplace ?
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
Because that area is going to be loaded anyways, isnt it? And it wouldn't fix the generating chunks issue as we will explore places further from 10k blocks
QarthO
QarthO•7mo ago
then pregen more than 10k
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
Oh right... it should, I really did not see that forum category
Torrent
Torrent•7mo ago
that only affects the 16x16 chunks around spawn iirc if spawn is set to always be loaded which is a setting in one of the paper configs i think
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
I mean, we are loading the area around spawn anyways quickly when exploring at the start
Torrent
Torrent•7mo ago
if you don't pregen, your server will lag so you should pregen
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
What about space occupied?
Torrent
Torrent•7mo ago
not sure what logic you're using here, people are always going to be loading new chunks if your world is bigger than 1kx1k
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
The logic is creating unexplored chunks
Torrent
Torrent•7mo ago
:thonk:
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
And generating that area wouldn't fix the exploration issue
Torrent
Torrent•7mo ago
what are you talking about pregenerating chunks means the CPU doesn't get taxed while trying to generate it while a bunch of players are online generating new chunks which lags the server what does "exploration" have to do with anything
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
you should always pregenerate

flipOP•7mo ago
Let's look into this situation: I create the server, everyone loads the area around spawn at start and gets a place to make a base. Which is what happens on the start of servers. This chunks are now generated, as they would with chunky. A player decides to travel 30k blocks to find a mesa biome, problem appears again.

hey guess what Have you ever heard of a worldborder
QarthO
QarthO•7mo ago
if u pregend to 20k, now it wont lag until they get passed 20k, 0 -> 20k blocks much less lag why not pregen?
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
^^ set a worldborder to stop players from going beyond 20k or whatever
QarthO
QarthO•7mo ago
zero reason to not pregen
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
mhm
QarthO
QarthO•7mo ago
yes, if they go past the pregen, lag will pick up.... but guess what. before that much less lag!!! wow!!! 😮

Generating an area of 20k blocks would take a lot of disk space?
QarthO
QarthO•7mo ago
yes, but good thing diskspace costs near nothing
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
World Size Calculator
Determine the file size of a world before you pregenerate
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
make sure your nether radius is 1/8th of your overworld pregen This isn’t completely accurate by the way
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
Yeah, generating that much isn't an option
QarthO
QarthO•7mo ago
then generate 10k lmao
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
How much disk space do you have???
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
I think it's around 60GB I'm unsure
QarthO
QarthO•7mo ago
he has, 80 GB
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
A normal 10k pregen is ~25gb that’s fine

idk why ur against it. You have the space. It'll help out a LOT. You asked how you can reduce lag. We're telling you byfar the best option do such. and you're just saying nah???

I will move this post to #marketplace, as it is in the wrong category and it is not addressing the main reason I created it. Also I'm sorry if I am being inconvenient/annoying or if you are not understanding me. It was not my intent. Thanks for the help. I'll take a look at pregenerating chunks :)
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
Also uh You say ‘16 render distance’
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
I think you miss understood me
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
what will your sim distance be
QarthO
QarthO•7mo ago
Be able to comfortably run at 16 render distance.
Also don't ever do this. Use the client side mod bobby
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago

flip
flipOP•7mo ago
I'm not saying no
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
8 view 6 sim max
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
10
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
too high
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
It's just not adressing the main point
QarthO
QarthO•7mo ago
You can run 32 render distance with bobby on a server with a render istance at 8
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago

QarthO
QarthO•7mo ago
it quite literally is
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
8 view, 6 sim max as I said then Bobby or distant horizons on the client
QarthO
QarthO•7mo ago
bigger render distance = more things the server has to track = more lag
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
^^^
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
I believe 6 simulation distance doesn't even cover the whole despawn sphere Nor the random tick box
Skullians
Skullians•7mo ago
despawn sphere is 8 chunks so do that if you really need it 10 view 8 sim, or 8 view 8 sim
flip
flipOP•7mo ago
I'll take a look at it, thanks :)

Modrinth
Bobby - Minecraft Mod
Allows for render distances greater than the server's view-distance
