Best way to secure a public server with home setup?

I'm fairly new to the self-hosting scene. I've hosted quite a few minecraft servers for friends and whatnot, but I think I want to have a go at a public server for anyone. My biggest concern is security and protecting my home network. I started by following a tutorial by Hardware Haven on setting up a server with CasaOS and Crafty. He reccommended using playit.gg as a tunneling method to make the server accessible to everyone. Is playit.gg a sufficient enough wall of security to allow anyone on the internet to join? I'm willing to throw a few bucks their way if it makes the whole hosting process easier/more secure. I'm not seeing anything about it on the setup.md website. Please let me know, and thank you in advance! 🙂

If you’re willing to pay, I’d always recommend using a shared host - a host where you get access to a panel and everything on your server, but they host the server, provide networking & hardware etc. There are factors that you have to take into account if you self host. - are you happy with running the PC 24/7? - are you happy with the noise & electricity bills that comes with that? - do you have a good enough connection? (At least 50mbps both ways? !pleb consider making a post in #marketplace with your PLEB if you want to do shared hosting instead

Honestly, I think going with a shared host might be the way for my own peace of mind. Its more costly than something like playit.gg, which is about 30$/year for their premium service, but a lot of the network stuff would already be done for me with a shared host.

if its just a couple of friends u could spend a day or two attempting to get the oracle cloud free tier vps and be totally fine. you wouldnt get any of the fancy ddos protection, but majority of the time its not needed unless ur planning to go big

^^ however they said ‘I want to have a go at a public server for anyone’ Oracle cloud does still apply, but it’s a pain in the ass to set up, you often have to try for weeks to months to get a server and the CPUs aren’t great, and you have to set up everything yourself (you just get a terminal, no panel or ui)
