Fashion, Offline - Topic of the day 6/16/24
OUTSIDE OF THE INTERNET, what is your relationship like with fashion? Do you ever use your mouth to talk about clothes? If you don't plan on taking a fit pic, do you still put that shit on?

I wear nice clothes when I feel like shit
I try to make an outfit at least minimally viable for a fit pick every day when im at home. When im travelling my wardrobe is much more constrained and practical so I often forgo positing the same fit 5 times in waywt
Apart from that I have a few friends I talk to about stuff
Damn I'm kinda jealous. I dont have anyone lol
Well, its mostly limited to going thrifting together
they are not that into clothing
Oh that I can relate
I ride bikes and a good proportion of my chat with my cycling buddies is kit chat. Good kit is important.
online fashion has ruined my brain so im always wondering if someone is wearing designer when they're usually not
but that makes the times i do run into someone wearing rick/needles/margiela/whatever much more fun and cool bc i don't live somewhere like new york where most people dress cool and good most of the time
I talk about fashion with my partner virtually everyday, and we (attempt to) to give each other objective feedback on our outfits. "do these shoes work here?" "does this color scheme make sense?" that kind of stuff. and it's fun talking about our differing styles, what we like and don't like. i don't have any in-person friends here to talk about men's fashion though in particular.
and i put in effort to dress okay (by my own standards) every day. i don't think my #waywt fits are any different than the days i don't post. but i also rarely get the feeling of "i'm putting that shit on" personally lol
I go to some events held by shops in my city that carry cool stuff (EG, kapital, earth studies,etc.). I always feel a bit like a poser when I show up but it’s cool to at least briefly meet people with similar vibes
Zoomer chiming in. Tite Kubo's art and stylistic fashion choices (Bleach) is a big inspo for sure
i always wear what i post and dress that way normally unless i am not going anywhere, then you will catch me in shorts and a t shirt.
i don't really have anyone to talk about it with irl, but i have other hobbies i enjoy talking about with people. fashion is really just my own thing outside of the rare chat with my sister and in the online space
Felt
Nah not really, I still feel like shit when I'm all dressed up but atleast I could take cute little photos and upload it at #waywt lol
Emotional damage makes me put on emotionally compelling fits
I b fitted and kitted every day and don't take a fit pic most of the time bc I don't rlly have anywhere to take one unless I'm at home lol
Legit debating whether or not I need a drone for fit pics or not
And emotionally compelling fits make emotional damage bearable
I know some of the bikers/cafe racers here do
I have a couple good friends irl who dress really well; we found each other largely through complimenting each other's outfits! But I think I'm the most into hashtag menswear, so I can't always get into the super-niches that are discussed here haha.
Same, like what the hell is gorpcore?
Techwear without the school shooter aesthetic
Hiking/Adventuring/Cycling/ coupled with Bright Colors
Well that's a simple way of putting it
Brands that fall under this category would be TNF PURPLE, Snow Peak, Klattermaüsen, CCP.FM, Tilak, etc
Bro it just beads off dw ab it
it's still weird to have actual conversations about clothes IRL (especially with people not on MFA) including or beyond "oh hey nice fit" buy i accept it as validation
Uncanny Valley
I find it interesting that there exists now a junction of gymgoers, fashion inclined, and anime nerds who all fall into a venn diagram of my community IRL
Post pandemic ofc
i've come to a point where i put some amount of effort into fits each day, though they may not always make it to #waywt (usually bc they're repetitive); i think it's been helpful for my style overall to not just dress for MFA
i try to dress stylishly to work, where we have a very lax dress code so i can pretty much wear whatever. and my coworkers do too for the most part, we all try to notice when someone is making an effort and compliment them on it
This is literally me irl
Me taking out the archive goose down jacket to admire before putting back in the closet (this happens every day on w reg workweek)
Literally me when someone calls my tweed glen check 3/2 Neapolitan natural shoulder sport coat a "blazer"
How often do you wear your "grail" pieces tho
How grail are we talkin
the experience of trying to show my friends fashion content
My most expensive fit to date I have worn to church 2 times
Holy bleeping sh#t may we see that sport coat?
Your archive down
Archive Sweater actually hurr durr
Damn, how expensive are we talkin?
$1.3k retail
Brother got a printout for their sweater😭
...uhh
The brand is run by a major oldhead weeb lmao
So uhh to keep in line with the topic, do people actually notice the pants irl?
Just the patterning layout
That's about it
Or do u talk to ppl irl aboutthe details or something
Pants are pants at the end of the day and no matter if it is fancy nylon or Loro Piana
One day it, like us will crumble to dust
Is this weeb perhaps a fan of tacticool equipment
Yea
I do own two cobra/rollercoaster belts but they're the Austrialpine originals
Idk if I love it I'm wearing it tbh
Well unless it's synthetic lol
Idk bro I just thrift alot and buy secondhand whenever I can
I try not to focus solely on price because if you do you'll revert to a brandclown
Color coordination is key
Sport coat so fire it could melt my socks off
But balancing the wallet on a knife's edge is less than ideal
Yeah same, I get shitted on alot for having most of my wardrobe thrifted lol
Imagine being laughed at for reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment
Wild times brother!!
Every time I say Aime Leon Dore out loud I want to waterboard myself
what point is there in owning cool stuff if you can't wear it is my belief
im pretty sure i mispronounce it constantly
you don't have to pronounce ALD if you don't own it :galaxybrain:
Fr, though it's probably an asian thing
Frfr
I just deflect from friends asking me about clohtes irl by saying i spend too much on em
They don't need to know how hard im flexing on em
yeah people tend to glaze over the details of most of my fits which in some aspects is good as i don't have to get into long conversations about union made blazers lol
But I try to put on something im at a minimum happy with every day. I work from home so like 90% of my outfits are not really seen by anyone beyond a few randoms if i run to a store or something.
And I change before I hit the gym which is probably where most people see me lul
I made the mistake of giving a presentation on ivy at a work retreat (we all had to present in a hobby and I had just read Ametora) and now people ask me “is this ivy?” at work all the time, so I guess I do talk about clothes more than I’d like to
but i own all these nice clothes so i wanna wear em even if im just chilling at my computer in them
Otherwise, no real friends I know irl are into clothes. All my close friend's know I am though.
except for the people ive met through this server lul
I can imagine the awkwardness lol.
i'm also 100% wfh and truthfully if i didn't make an effort to dress with intention during the week i'd probably be miserable lol
plus added bonus is i can workshop for a weekend event
if it makes highlights during the week
The main reason I joined this server is because I dont have anyone to talk to about clothes lol
well damn theres a good outfit
counterpoint i wfh and i just put on whatever shirt is most accessible, but i'll change if im leaving the house most of the time bc i want to like the clothes im in In The World
I dress like a slob when I don’t leave my house lol
definitely have done the "wait this goes hard let's save it for when i have to engage with people"
a lot of what i try to wear has to do with silhouette and Big Pants or Big Shorts and none of that is noticeable when im a floating head in a video call
none of it is noticable on a call or anything but im just a loser
like i would wear an outfit a week if i did that
which is why i don't
the last time i went in-office i was the most formally dressed lol
nah we just have different priorities
mind you i only wore a blazer, ocbd and andrews
but ya i already have to deal with going to the gym lookign terrible which is where 90% of people see me
gotta dress well the rest of the time
Are suits that rare nowadays?
no, just my particular company is at peace with one stop below business casual
no one really gave a shit about it which is fine with me, it normalizes how i dress when i go in
i would be more inclined to be more formal vs less traditional to work, fwiw, so stuff like the pajama suit is for weekends
Man I wish I too could wear a navy blazer and not look slightly out of place. I mean I dont really give a fuck if I'm "overdressed" but it would be nice to be in a room where people are expected to wear atleast a sport coat
Suits and by extension blazers here are only worn during weddings lol
Which is kind of a bit sad
Ethan M. Wong
a little bit of rest
What Is An Occasion?
Is getting boba an Occasion? Yes! Is it dumb to wear a cool fit to do it? No! You can bet your ass I’m going to wear clothes I love to do a thing I enjoy.
Ethan stays winning
anyway if you wanna wear menswear you gotta just wear it
I think anyone wearing a blazer is considered overdressed here
noone wears suits/blazers cause of dress codes
except like, finance/law I guess lol
I’ve literally never seen anyone in a blazer that wasn’t some visitor in the entire building that I work in
Definitely don’t see any casual blazers here
Fuck yeah!
i work in tech my offices don't have a dress code
Same
I wish I worked in an office lmao
And if you see someone that does wear a jacket, its probably an orphaned suit jacket or a full suit. Never a blazer or a sport coat
Unironically I'm a milkman
uhh... what's your milkman fit?
Ngl, milkman fit goes hard
Da Hugo Boss AMG Petronas zip tank inside the red polo is diabolical work
Are those pants similar to the one you sent earlier?
Yea those are a more accessible version
The holsterlike pockets gave it away lol

She gorp on my core until I uhhhhh
(it's Sunday I can't say the rest)
Gorp on my corp sounds way better
Damn It's sunday in your country?
It's already monday in ours lol
And it's past midnight and I had too much coffee and now I am discussing clothes to strangers on the internet
I'm a Yank yea
i still put things on when i’m not taking fit pics but most of the time i’m not taking pics is when it’s a repeat without new stylings (ie, same base, diff accessories) or when it’s a lame shirt and pants day because i’m still redoing my wardrobe
I wear what I want, where I want, when I want. I've made friends who I get to hang out with through the common interest of clothes initially, but were also really cool in other ways. People know that clothes are a big part of my life and generally compliment what I'm wearing. Simple as.
Wearing clothes ✅
Letting the clothes wear you ❌
My friends are not much into fashion necessarily but I yap enough that everyone knows I'm into it
I can't escape the allegations
But honestly I have enough of my own aesthetic that people comment on it regularly
I only yap about style to my SO lol, hopefully they're not tired of me saying "Men should wear more high rise trousers" for the millionth time
I have never taken a fit pic, and I talk to my wife more than anyone about fashion really. Putting that shit on , and Going Outside is vastly rewarding.
I was the most formally dressed person at my work summer party, and I was wearing a western shirt..
Actual gif of what it feels like to go outside
Do you think this depends on how popular fashion is where you live?
partly yes and partly because it's for the less traditional fits
no one has stopped me when I'm wearing an ocbd and 501s for example
my partner loves enabling me and has started to unearth their own fav designers.
my friends will sometimes ask me how much I paid for specific pieces but it's genuinely out of curiosity. We all met thru hobby shit tho so like, spending money on things isn't shocking.
Also if I bought the clothes I'm wearing the clothes lmao, nothing stays unworn out of fear of ruining it because mending and cleaning is ez.
It’s kinda interesting that I think i spend a lot of money (I do ) on clothes but my friends would be like look I got this banana republic jacket for 20% off so now it’s only $160 and I realize a designer jacket I bought on sale or used is around the same price
Like any hobby once you get into it you start spending more on things you like
Just see keyboards lmao
i also never fully answered the question so. my relationship with fashion irl is keeping as few dresses as possible in my closet because i really just don't like a majority of them
sometimes i do!!
sometimes they're fun and cute
but that "sometimes" is so rare that i can't justify keeping more than exactly two in my wardrobe
at most
and it drives me crazy when i have family that likes to insist that i need dresses.
i do not!! let me get a nice dress shirt and slacks that don't show off my "birthing hips" and i'll be a happy camper i promise you.
honest to god it's why i'm trying to get away from slim fits, they show off my hips and it makes me want to shrivel up and die, they're so much harder to wear androgynously/masculinely to me than something that hangs in a way that muddles the curve from my hips to my knees
Oh man that does happen to me, retail prices for some pretty mid stuff is surprising
same but suits honestly
Personally I'm happy w the way I dress offline but irl I've been called brave just for wearing a floral dress shirt :yea:
if that's brave then you are surrounded by cowards
I've tried using my mouth to talk about clothes, and it's a 50/50 chance on if I will be called a slur 😦
Which fucking sucks
There's a lot of fits that I've wanted to try but not had the courage to wear.
But also sometimes I'm outside and having a coffee at a cafe and just noting down fits I like. For example, an old man wearing a green tweed sportcoat with distressed paint splattered jeans and work boots. I remember thinking "damn that's a good workwear fit" and then I saw the toolbox he was carrying and was like "he probably at work".
So now I am lowkey on the lookout for a green blazer.
Just roll up in double denim and tell them its matching fabrics ergo a suit :sheeesh:
