wholecuts and lace gaps

Got these Meermin hand welted whole cuts. Fit snug but well, except for the large gap at the laces - I’ve got fairly high instep, so maybe this style just isn’t for me. I’ve read wholecuts do tend to stretch more than regular oxfords, any truth to that? Do these look too clunky as they are? These are for black tie, obviously not going to wear with jeans

Yeah, this looks like a high instep issue. Also I don't think wholecuts will stretch enough to make that gap go away.

Meermin lasts are pretty narrow and shallow, might just not be the brand for you

I also have a high instep, and when I tried Meermin's cap toe Oxfords on the Hiro last, they were painfully tight across the top, though they were too big everywhere else. I'm not sure why wholecuts would stretch differently than regular Oxfords, though perhaps I'm wrong. Incidentally, Meermin does have a cap toe Oxford in a wide fitting, though of course that wouldn't be ideal for black tie.

Thanks folks, I’m sending them back and going to look at something else. Not totally averse to regular oxfords, just like the idea of the wholecut to make it a bit different. Definitely more options in the regular though

TBH I think this looks within the realms of normal/fine.
