mangohud for frametime graphs/framerate, obs for recording
thanks ill take a look at the mangohud!
it annoys me to no end that the LG monitor i got does not include this spec, just says that it supports hdr
how can i find the peak brightness through software?
or would i need some special instrument to measure it?
You would need equipment I think. I would check to see if RTINGS or something has a review of it, or try and find what panel it has inside
it’s nanoips, i know that for sure, but alright i’ll look into it on rtings
Depending on the monitors age it may have a specific certification from VESA. They usually do like HDR400, 600, 800, 1000
Honestly if the monitor is from >3 years ago its probably really bad. HDR 400 isn't even really HDR. And it didnt work on IPS monitors without local dimming which isn't great
HDR is a ratio though. The max brightness of OLED TVs doesnt need to be as bright as LCD TVs. Though OLED TVs even from a few years ago go up to 1000 I think
It can depend on your room. If your not willing to compromise on curtains or position. But I think OLED TV in a dark room is worth it
And I dont know how they do HDR on phones but it usually looks good so idk
Oled have an infinite black level which throws a wrench in a normal conversation about it. HDR is actually more about contrast than brightness. The higher peak brightness the better, but it all depends on what the content is graded for, and there will be diminishing returns after a certain point. Yes, the higher contrast will be there, but can you even see it? I find more value in better contrast in dark areas than bright. So oled is superior
Thats true. Theres HDR and then theres "LG's HDR test footage"
I was watching the first episode of Kingdom on Netflix and I swear LG must have sponsored cause HDR looked amazing
And I also like the dark cause I play a lot of horror games
Makes me wonder how the HDR grading works on games though
I think that 1000 nits is a realistic expectation going forward for consumer HDR. Maybe not on LCDs but I don’t think I’ll ever buy an lcd panel again if I can help it. It still looks better than SDR and can be obtained at reasonable prices
If the monitor market wasn’t price gouged trash panels all the time, we’d already have that in most gaming monitors
