Favorites Seres: Overshirts - Topic of the day 5/23/24
What are your favorite overshirts? Anything that sticks out at various price points? What do you look for in a overshirt? What brands have been great for them and what brands have really let you down? Do you prefer button or zip options? Feel free to share a few of your favorite fits or inspo that feature overshirts, too. The Favorites Series is part of a ~weekly recurring TOTD to replace/updated the 5 year old "Best X for $X" threads on r/mfa.

Is this the same as a chore coat
No
It has fewer pockets and is therefore inferior /j
I think a chore coat is an overshirt, but an overshirt may not be a chore jacket
No. Lets stay overshirt positive here
Generally I rarely get dedicated overshirts, i just have a few shirts that I like to wear as overshirts.
not a traditional overshirt but this bug shirt from exofficio has surprising utility (even though i've worn it with the same pants)
a decade ago i would've said norse project jens jacket but how time sorts things
I have a couple of overshirts from Barena that I really like. On Yoox, they're generally around $75-$125.
I used to buy a lot of overshirts and then realized that it's far more interesting to use an actual shirt as an overshirt. If I need a heavier fabric, I'd go with outerwear that offers more coverage anyways. Plus the stuff that's usually sold as "overshirts" is underwhelmingly basic and boring.
I'm a big fan of more structured overshirts like chore coats (especially linen), more cropped shirt-style jackets, and safari jackets. Oh, and it either needs to be buttoned or have a 2-way zipper.
I like my engineered garments wool CPO shirt
My Uniqlo linen cotton shirt jacket in navy
And I think I'd count my knit 3sixteen crosscut flannel as an overshirt too
And then light loose fitting shirts are the overshirts of the summer
I have this casentino overshirt from Percival that I like quite a bit, although the stitching is pretty wonky in some areas:

Percival workshirts, like overshirts but cut in a slightly wider fit and with different pocket details. A shirt for over another shirt. A shacket. A shirt come jacket. A mens overshirt or shirt for whomever wants to wear it, and wear it they may. This could be a hobby shirt, a DIY shirt, a workshirt, a WFH shirt. Cut in a beautiful Italian custo...

I picked up this one from Asket a while back and it's been halfway around the world.
I always wanted to try sewing some patches onto it to give it some more personality, but I could never find the right inspiration
This was the fit that got me to buy it
Big fan of Wax Londons overshirts, they have nice colorways and interesting knit texture
I love my overshirts. They make a simple plain colour T-shirt into something more sophisticated or work appropriate (I work in language education)
I bought an exact similar looking one from Arket. I tried the Asket one too which is great, but I liked the slightly regular fit of Arket better than Asket's sharp fit. You look great in it though. Thanks for the patches idea.
I never heard of overshirts before a few days ago, but I think I just bought one
