No more thumbnails in file explorer when using OBS
So I use OBS mostly to capture clips when playing games. This has worked fine untill about 2 months ago without any specific change when I take clips they no longer show any thumbnails in the file explorer. Any clips from before this time still have thumbnails, just any new clips won't have any thumbnails. I tried using a fresh/portable installation of OBS to see if it had something to do with my specific OBS configuration but even with the new portable installation I still get no thumbnails.
Any ideas on what I should be looking at to restore thumbnails for my clips going forward?

OBS doesn't create or select thumbnails for recordings, that would be up to Windows itself
You can try clearing the thumbnail cache and make Windows generate new thumbnails
Do you use VLC or the windows photo app?
If you use VLC might be the codec. For some reason I don't get thumbnails on AV1 files but no problem with HEVC /AVC.
Also MKV usually won’t populate thumbnails regardless
Never had problems with thumbs on mkv files
Ok so I just got around to revisting this. Since I made this post nothing had changed, the issue still existed as it has. I just cleared the thumbnail cache through disk cleanup but now the thumbnails that were showing on the clips taken prior to 3 months ago now don't have thumbnails either.
I use VLC. I use HEVC for the clips but my OBS settings have went unchanged since I initially set it up on this PC a little over a year ago and I had thumbnails all that time up until 3 months ago
I do use MKV files, though I never had issues with thumbnails before on MKV files, even on my previous PC which I also used MKV. I pulled in a clip from years ago when I used MP4 and it has the same issue.
From doing some research online since a lot of people are having this specific issue, I can only see that it's a VLC issue. People using MPC and the K-lite codec pack do get thumbnails generated for videos they record with OBS, even in AV1
Yeah VLC just shows traffic cone
