How Do People Dress in your Area? - Topic of the day 5/18/24

What trends do you notice where you live? Are people more casual? More formal? Any particular regional trends? Could you think of why that is?

It's NYC so I think my answer is: "Better than I do."

same; I think it‘s quite difficult answering this question but I‘m absolutely convinced that middle aged germans dress the worst of all different generations there‘s simply no thought whatsoever put into whatever they are wearing Yeah, definitely much younger ppl!

I live in the burbs of a southern mid-size city. Definitely don’t see much of what people wear here.

I'd say most below 30s dress okay, even if they aren't in college atm

Liverpool is fucking weird. North face Nupstes and shorts/slides (must be Adidas) in the summer. White socks are illegal, as are wallets. Montirex everywhere, yet basically unknown to the rest of the UK. Air Max 95 basically the patron saint of the city, yet somehow On Running took a massive foothold recently. There's this hyper local sportswear look with a bunch of unwritten rules, mingled with a load of never left the 90s and it came around again styles. Definitely the most trainer obsessed city in the UK

there’s so much arc’teryx i often have to stop and stare. lot of nike athleisure, mauritius leather, boho chic on the ladies, fur/faux fur coats (ladies), basic t-shirt and cargos fits… the single most well-dressed guy i’ve seen was a business hotshot i guess who walked into the coffeeshop yesterday morning around when i did who wore this sick ass loud blue and white grid suit oh we’ve had an on running epidemic too

Right? Technically an outdoors brand. These grim wavey pattern tshirts are everywhere here and I don't understand

Imma have to disagree I think this is how ppl dress in Cap Hill and the like but people mostly dress more casually in the other denser areas. Georgetown skews very basic euro due to shopper tourist density. Downtown and the Mall is literally students and their parents so it's as basic and schlocky touristy as it gets. 14th St / Dupont / NoMA / Navy Yard, especially the former two, skew way more young professional white collar WFH so they're very luxe athleisure heavy with brands like Lulu and Athleta and Alo and Nike very prominent. The densest spots like Columbia Heights skew toward streetwear and thrift, boho in the summer. Mt P and Edgewood and the like still have a lot of punks.

The most stylish man I ever saw in a London kebab shop (Haggerston) was this guy: https://www.toa.st/blogs/magazine/nourishment-ole-hansen

idk, lived in norway and I think from all the countries that i visited and lived in, that norway had among the best 'average' of people dressed well.

Think it has something to do with low wealth inequality, a relatively large middle class, high levels of cultural homogeneity made possible by a relatively small population, the importance placed on clothing and a long history of design in that general region. Like I saw tons of people dressed well - but also indeed similarly to one another - in Copenhagen, and even among people in their late twenties there was an odd emphasis on ‘coolness’ I have otherwise only encountered among teenagers. And obviously trendiness was related to coolness. Could be bullshit speculation on my part but I don’t think it’s an inscrutable mystery either.
