Goose in a Jar

Could someone give me a rundown of different kinds of jackets/outer layers?

I want to start dressing better since I'm starting college next fall. I'm looking for things that I can wear as an outer layer other than just hoodies. I'd really appreciate just a description of several different kinds of jackets, what they can be worn with, etc. cause I'm not really sure where to start.

I think its really going to depend on your personal style, the rest of your wardrobe and the climate of where you are going! https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1125076626665910332/1127994957836324947 in here under Outerwear and Tops you will find all the info you need many of those links have associated inspiration albums where you can find inspiration for styling them also check out #waywt for lots of ideas. If you need help IDing someone's jacket/sweater etc you can always ask in the discord! if you can bring in some inspiration photos, we can always help in describing how to style. bonus points if you give us outfit pics from your current wardrobe so we know where you're at 🙂

From the beloved MFA basic guide, you can start with light jackets like trucker/ denim jacket or some basic coach jacket. Field jacket is also classic. If you want to get more, a pea coat would be the choice to get one step further, also good for more chilly days. Below are some suggestion from the guide. https://malefashionadvice.substack.com/p/building-a-basic-wardrobe-v70 " Outerwear (as needed for your specific climate) Light jackets such as a trucker jackets in indigo/black denim or tan/olive cotton, chore coats in olive/brown, or field jackets in olive/brown/gray. Raincoat in olive, gray, or black, although vibrant colors can work too. Warm jacket such as an overcoat or parka in dark neutrals (gray/brown for overcoats, olive/gray/black for parkas). Baby steps: There is a whole wide world of jackets out there, both light and heavy, so look into several different varieties to figure out what you like. Avoid: Trying to skimp out on jackets if you live in a cold/rainy climate. Being too cold or getting soaked is miserable!"

I think a short peacoat feels a bit too 2015ish, a longer double breasted coat is more in style now

I do enjoy my full length coats. But it just gets warmer and warmer TT

Can always get an unlined mac, single breasted trench or cotton shop coat for inclement summer But yeah, when it's 100% t-shirt weather you gotta pack up the "long coats"

There are so many options it's hard to know how to guide you. Chore coats, sweaters and cardigans, overshirts, blazers, fleece, puffers, peacoats, overcoats. That's what I can think of from my wardrobe, and I've barely scratched the surface.

If you're used to wearing hoodies all the time, you could also look at something like an CPO shirt - a sort of hybrid between a shirt and jacket that imo is about as comfy and easy to throw on as a hoodie but can be dressed up or down and also used as a layering piece under a coat.
