does distant horizons work with the simply optimized modpack
or is it just not working because i'm on 1.20.4

which version of dh are you on? your best shot would be the nightly builds from #links-n-downloads or the rc from #announcements
yeah i got the latest nightly build thing
does it crash at startup?
no
it just doesn't make the far-away chunk thingy
i tried it without the modpack and it worked pretty good
what's your vanilla render distance?
might just be slow worldgen

way too much. try something more reasonable such as 8 to 12

lods are probably still being generated
they generate from where you're at, and outwards
with 12 it does generate the lod stuff but it doesn't go very far, and i have waited a bit but it doesn't seem to expand
if you want i can send my full mod list but i just wanted to know if it was an optimization mod or something that was conflicting with dh

If it feels like LoD generation with
Distant Generator is too slow:
Try increasing CPU Load in Distant Horizons settings for faster generation, but you will experience more lag spikes and stuttering due to heavier workload on CPU.
To see if Distant Generator is really working or not:
1) Check CPU usage while in-game, using Aggressive settings of CPU Load. If CPU usage's hovering around 80-100%, the LoDs are generating in the background.
2) Go to DH settings > Advanced Options > Debug > Wireframe, set Enable Debug Wireframe Rendering and Show World Gen Queue to True.
Enabling both settings will show you the visualization of world gen tasks queued and working on the map (blue boxes for queued tasks, red boxes for working tasks)try step 2
fyi dh uses vanlla worldgen for distant generation. it's bound to be very slow
