Why is it that if it hasn't been a while since hitting the database, it will take a long time to reconnect, is there a way that once it has been connected at the beginning it won't be turned off again?

this very likely has nothing to do with Drizzle, but rather the database provider you're using. They probably have a paid plan that never turns off the database.
