Game Mode doesn't work after update to 3.0

After the system starts up, it boots directly in Gnome instead of gaming mode. When I try to go to the gaming mode by using the menu shortcut, it fallback to Gnome again. So the gaming mode doesn't work at all. Prior to the update I ran rpm-ostree initramfs --disable, then I updated regularly using the system update shortcut

what happens if you explicitly try and enter game mode from the terminal? i.e. what happens if you run sudo /usr/bin/return-to-gamemode Do you get a useful error message Also have you tried rebooting? If that doesn't work it might be worth booting into your old image and seeing if you can get into gaming mode. I think there have been quite a few issues with the Fedora 39 to 40 upgrade

I also have this problem sometimes if i reboot i can get it to go into game mode, but the return to game mode shortcut (and executing /usr/bin/return-to-gamemode) doesn't get me there. I'm running on the :testing tag now, and no change, for the bazzite-deck image, and had previously been on 2.5.0/f39

I saw this yesterday on a 7900 GRE and Ryzen 3600x, plugged into an LG C1 with freesync. I rebased back to the last 39 build. I’ll rebase forward again and share logs if it’s helpful.

if you can, that would be cool @ghosttoaster trying to consolidate reports of this in one place, do you mind sharing since you started the other thread? also cc @Rumble from that thread as well. re: can't log out to game mode in bazzite 3.0.0

Looks like a kernel regression, are all of you 7xxx series? 6xxx I can confirm works

wow, i haven't seen that! mine just refuses to even try to go to game mode, but i did manage to get it to boot to game mode a few times (inconsistently), and at first HDR was disabled and then it seemed to work when I re-enabled it

cat ~/.gamescope-stdout.log | fpaste output here https://paste.centos.org/view/e9fb2ad7 cat ~/.gamescope-cmd.log | fpaste output here https://paste.centos.org/view/a9a071be I went to desktop from psychadelic mode, tried the return to gamemode shortcut which failed, then snagged those logs. lemme know if there are others that would be helpful. I gotta do dad duty but I'll come back later. I bet I have a non HDR monitor I could test with in my storage room. Jorge saw me complaining on mastodon yesterday and was very kind so I feel like I ought to help out 😅

I appear to be able to get a normal, HDR-enabled game mode if I fully shut down my machine and restart, but it crashes within a few min ~/.gamescope-stdout.log: https://paste.centos.org/view/c58ee4e3

The testing branch has a much newer gamescope Worth trying, if that still fails it's almost certainly kernel And we'll figure it out

journalctl -u systemd-coredump* | fpaste https://paste.centos.org/view/3c2f0033 I'm actually on testing, since the other thread about this had suggested that there might be some fixes there I'm not sure if these coredumps are helpful, but there's a lot of instances of gamemode-wl dying with mesa issues that correspond to my game mode crash times

I've already discussed this some with @nickname in another thread, but I have the same issue on my HTPC (using bazzite-deck with KDE). GPU is an AMD 7800 XT, hooked up to a Samsung S90C TV.

yeah more details on this: HDR related with 7900 series AMD GPUs most likely spawned from the new kernel rebase to :39 for the time being for a functional device

I'm on a 7800; I guess the issue extends to that one as well as the 7900? (I'm assuming the architecture isn't hugely different)

7800 XT here (with an HDR-capable monitor, although not enabled). I had this issue as well, but it seems to have been resolved with the latest testing image. Tried both booting directly into game mode, as well as using the desktop shortcut. I'm using the deck image btw. Edit: Have also tested with HDR enabled on both my monitor and game mode and KDE, and it all works fine.
Wispirr
Wispirr8mo ago
I also just had success getting into game mode after rebasing to bazzite-deck:testing! (On a 7800 XT) HDR also seems fine. I am seeing a bit of weirdness, in that Steam doesn't seem to forward resolutions to games by default, so they all think they can only display up to 720p resolution. I am able to manually set Steam's settings for each individual game to forward the correct resolution though.
Kyle Gospo
Kyle Gospo8mo ago
Glad to hear that! New gamescope is on the way, we can't launch it yet because of that 720p issue and some other patches we have to rebase from the older build but once that's done I'll move it over to stable @nickname new fix to suggest to affected users
Wispirr
Wispirr8mo ago
Sweet. Yeah, I figured the 720p thing was probably an unrelated issue in the testing branch.

I just switched back to testing and it looks like I still get a crash on return to game mode https://paste.centos.org/view/308326fa It doesn’t even kick me back to KDE now, full lockup cc @nickname lmk if I can test or give you anything else from my machine. 7900 xtx + 5950x on an hdr display, and I had hdr enabled on KDE fwiw
tryhardsoccermomswag
im just the messenger i dont even use steam gaming mode interesting it's broken on the latest build of :testing ill let the gaming mode bazzite maintainers know
porkloin
porkloin8mo ago
👍 i also noticed that even if i try to play a game from KDE desktop with hdr enabled that games don't detect that I have HDR available obviously i have very limited experience with KDE 6, but i wonder if that's the same case for other 7xxx card users on bazzite too? I'm assuming that having HDR enabled in KDE should cause games to allow enabling HDR in the game itself. I tested with horizon forbidden west and CP2077, HDR option was grayed out/unavailable in both anyway, back to :39 for me, if anyone wants me to rebase and test again at any point lmk

That's expected, you need vkhdr layer which we ship Requires manual setup You can also use a Wayland native version of wine/proton

ah, is that in ujust? vkhdr, that is

No, it's a pre-installed Vulkan layer package You just need to follow their instructions in their readme Requires specific launch options to take effect

gotcha, i was trying to find any info about vkhdr but search on this discord comes up with nothing

Trying to have that on stable tonight or tomorrow we're rock and a hard place -- gamescope got a massive refactor, and patches on the old version are necessary for a lot of handheld hardware we support so a lot has to happen before it hits stable soon!

I also ran into this issue on my setup (7900XTX, LG C2) and :testing resolved the issue. However, it seems to have caused a different issue, HDR+VRR no longer seems to work - the FPS counter on my TV's VRR debug menu is stuck at 118.x Hz regardless of the actual game framerate, and panning the camera slowly there is some choppiness. Turning off HDR seems to resolve the issue. HDR+VRR works on :39 though, so I'm guessing something else regressed. I also noticed some pretty bad color banding in bright areas in a couple games I tested (Horizon Zero Dawn and FFVII Remake), so it seems like maybe HDR is broken. They look great in :39. I did notice that even on :39, if HDR is enabled system-wide but the game doesn't have HDR support, VRR is also locked at 118.x Hz. Basically need to play SDR games with HDR disabled and HDR games with HDR enabled for VRR to work. Maybe on :testing some sort of horrific HDR->SDR->HDR mapping is going on somehow?

Interesting I don’t have any of those symptoms Right now I’m on ‘bazzite:stable’ (non deck/game mode image and am just using start commands to get game mode hdr from KDE

Have there been any updates to this? I have the same problem, I think. I installed everything fine, then on booting to game mode I get a black screen, can't do anything, not sure how I can get back to desktop mode. Using a 6750xt and HDR monitor.

disable HDR? for now anyway, I'm running bazzite stable with RX 7900XTX and a LG 4K HDR monitor and don't have these issues, mind you HDR is awful on this monitor so I run with it disabled

Yeah, I disable HDR on mine as well. I find it pointless, unless you've got a decent OLED monitor.
jonnypanic
jonnypanic8mo ago
Thanks. Do you mean disable the monitor's HDR output, or disable from Bazzite OS? If it's OS, not sure I can do that without reinstalling. In the current state, I can't get to the OS, unless there is some way to force boot into desktop mode

You should be able to disable it in the display settings in bazzite

No luck, unfortunately. Reinstalled twice, tried HDR on and off, and still get the same black screen. I wonder if it's not related to the HDR issue. Will try an earlier version of bazzite-deck tomorrow. I managed to fix it by installing to a different drive. For some reason, Gaming Mode would fail on my external nvme drive. But is fine on internal SSD.
