Should I switch jobs?
I’ve been a software engineer at a large automotive company for 5 years and my base salary is about $110k. I work remotely in California. I’m considering applying to some tech companies that I can get referrals from senior engineers/researchers who I met in college and at conferences. Do you think I should switch jobs?

Do you want to switch jobs? Are you satisfied where you currently are? If you were to switch jobs, what would be the deciding factor? (money, tech stack, type of project work...)?
My main motivator to switch jobs is to reach a higher salary and to work on something new
I also work from California and 110 is very low for a company that is based in thr state. Your results may vary, but that sounds objectively low if your efficiency can be shown to exceed 5 years SWE
Edit: The market is hot garbage right now, so that's to be considered. 110 still seems low though
I mean I know it might not be a viable option, but maybe you guys should consider moving? 110k is a lot of money anywhere in the world except California.
That aside @yadaraf if you think you should switch jobs, then you should switch jobs. It really doesn't matter what anyone else here thinks, if you're unhappy with your current employment.
Just note that a referral doesn't guarantee a job, especially in today's market.
My company is based in Michigan- for a while I thought it was nice to work on EST timezone because I get off work at 1pm everyday, but I'm also missing the best time for surfing (in the morning)
I like living in CA too much to move
Why not just interview around and see your options
No one has to know about “window shopping”. You could look at it like you are assessing options just like anyone would. I mean you never know he might see something he actually likes and get a good offer which would make him switch. A job is not guaranteed to give you an offer after an interview so you’re not guaranteed to accept an offer after an interview. You could just politely say thank you for the interview it wasn’t a good fit for xyz. And the. Again you might get a really good offer which will make him change the his kind.
