Jeans and Tshirt Fit Advice

Hi everyone, Not very fashion-minded but have started looking for some jeans and tshirts to try make a basic wardrobe. Not sure what fit I should be going for. Always been told I should go with fitting clothes because of my build, but not sure of validity of advice, or how 'fitting' is too fitting! Any and all advice is greatly appreciated! Photos are to portray fit and not specifically colours!

Straight fit jeans look the best out of the three. The tees are all too small in the arms. You'll probably need to try a different brand. The tee you have on in the jean examples fits much better

Would I size any chinos I get to the same as my jeans? I've always had this problem with tshirts, the black one I'm wearing in the photos is an XXL and is loose on the arms but super baggy and long on the belly! I plan to wear an overshirt on top of the tshirt, should that affect the fit of the tshirt? Thank you!

The black shirt doesn’t look loose and baggy at all. Is it just really long? It’s going to look baggy in comparison to how slim all of those jeans fit, but I assure you it looks fine. Agree the straight jeans look best, but even they look a little too slim for my eyes.

It's really long and probably doesn't show because it's tucked in but is super loose on the belly! On the arms it lightly hugs and isn't as tight as the XL, L, and M in the photos! Iirc it's a fruit of the loom but I also have a bunch of other black blanks like Stanley Stella, Bella & Canvas, Gildans etc whereas the coloured one in the photos is just a cheap store tee. I could size up to a W33 or W34 jeans in the hopes of making it looser?

Maybe give wider cut jeans a go

if you're sticking to the brand in the pics sizing up in pants might be ideal - the straight fit is the best of the three but it looks like it's pulling at the hips. for the shirt i'll echo chase/ler and say the black tee is well fitted at the arms and shoulders and that the other ones are too tight but it's probably the brand or cut of tee itself

I won't be sticking to the brand in the pics I was just testing them to gauge my size which will complicate things even further I'm guessing! What does pulling at the hips mean?

no problem! different brands will have different definitions of sizing which can make this a frustrating experience for sure. the 'pulling' at the hips are those horizontal lines going across the waistband; you usually see this with tight jeans or pants that don't have elastic or spandex in them. it's less of a factor with pants that do have elastic, like the joggers.

Well that's unideal as I'm fairly certain these were stretch jeans! I can order a W32 L32 wide fit pair, do you think it's worth going W33 L32 straight and/or W34 L32 straight to try too? Thank you!

If it's from the same brand, I'd go up from the size pictured there.

It won't be the same brand as they don't go up one inch in waist sizes, I'll likely look on asos and try get everything the same brand on there to try!

if the brand has a generous return policy get both and see which one you prefer (or post another thread either one). there's some trial and error to buying jeans in general but imo they're less formal so a super precise fit isn't as necessary (to me)

I’m with zeo - those are too small. Definitely try a 33 and 34 to get some more breathing room. You’ll probably need a 34 and then get the waist taken in.

Strongly recommend looser cuts. That straight is pretty slim for a straight, you may be able to find a cut that works for you without needing tailoring if you look around Maybe a Levi's 560 or 569 if you're able to try them on

Straight cut in the first pic is definitely best. I'd go a tad wider in the leg but some of the snugness in the top block is nice for a western feel. Also definitely different shirt cuts. You can still tell you have muscles in the first grey shirt. I like the drape personally even tho it feels "baggy" around your stomach. It really just looks better

I basically have a scaled down version of your build (usually M in shirts and a 29-30 waist) and totally get what you mean with the larger sized shirts. Some cuts of shirts just don't work for me and it makes me feel like I'm basically wearing a dress because they fit my chest/shoulders and then just look really long and big around my midsection - not exactly the look I'm going for. For layering I personally like the tshirt to be on the slimmer side so it doesn't get all lumpy under whatever the outer layer is, but that's just my preference and baggy layers can look cool too. I think the straight jeans look good and the XL shirt is great (even if the current trend is to go bigger)
