Style Highlight: Milsurp - Topic of the day 4/6/24
Fatigues, flight jackets, snorkel parkas, combat boots, cargos, peacoats, and arguably even navy blazers; it's clear that military garments play a massive role in fashion today. What are your favorite milsurp items? Do you incorporate them into other styles or do you deck yourself out in full milsurp? What are some of your favorite milsurp fits? Favorite camo? Do you feel conflicted at all about wearing milsurp? Share some inspo or discuss anything and everything milsurp in today's TOTD.

it'd be awesome creating a list of all the different milsurp items out there
hey it would be nice if we could get some fits/inspo to compile a new inspo album re: https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1222213477314334741/1222229916951646381
beside that, I've always loved my bombers and I think I'd always have a bit of a soft spot for them. I got fatigues a while ago from sinbad and I'm still figuring it out, but it's cool how those garments have developed since then like Needles having a HD version of fatigues
Fatigues plus ivy good
milsurp is my favorite brand
the green is just so good
Milsurp is fine i guess idk
it would probably be easier to list all the stars in the sky
Yah that would he an insane task
Just memorize them like i have duh
Woke up with milsurp on the mind too. Absolutely love this coat I thrifted.
i’m definitely interested in surplus coats… trench coats, b-3 bomber…
i like my jackets
maybe a little too much
Milsurp is cool when you wear it in a cool way and not a fashy way
(Especially olive stuff)
yea
Bought this jacket today. “Do you feel conflicted at all?” Yup, if that wasn’t visible :xd:
Love my peacoat and my og-107s. I definitely agree with GSH that fatigues and a blazer is great. I'm wearing that right now, in fact.
tbh the black and grey stuff with skulls is a bad look too
Is that stuff even milsurp, do militaries issue it or just cornball third parties?
Anyway milsurp stuff is great. Affordable generally and a massive influence on mens fashion in particular.
Just so many iconic items but especially jackets.
This actually makes me wonder if perceptions are subtly different in Canada vs the US, I feel like milsurp is more typically associated with countercultural vibes thanks to Mohawk activists following Kanesatake and Americans fleeing the draft in the 70s
Yeah where I grew up (in Auckland NZ) I feel like I associated (vintage? Import? I feel like a lot of it was imported) milsurp with art kids and left leaning youth bc it was cheap and available to buy in areas that we hung out in. But that might be bc I run in left leaning art kid circles lol. Also didn't see a ton of camo in the city. NZs military is comparatively small. Now as an adult in NYC I don't think I have any associations with milsurp unless someone's in full camo - which isn't necessarily milsurp ig?
Really like milsurp the colours tend to be good and of course the very function-oriented design is great.
Its pretty much always a counterculture thing in the UK at least
Very different attitude to the military in general
Y'all are so corny, obviously it's also associated with counter culture (and just, normal culture) in the US. You are just tripping if you don't think your local facist party in your country isn't larping in milsurp
Which was spaghettis point
Facism is in fact a global thing
wasn't saying it's not present elsewhere at all, I was just idly reflecting that milsurp tends to 'say' counterculture in public, whereas the tacticool LARPers I've seen tend to lean more gray man Arcteryx LEAF
and was wondering if this was different in the States at all
Nah different countries are actually pretty different?? Even the UK where the right wing probably either look upper class or like football hooligans. Like have you got any evidence for this? And not plate carriers or such, but like, the same types of items MFAers like?
Is there like any outfit with fatigues or an olive field jacket going to present that kinda bad vibes? For real even if you wore Vietnam era jacket and pants, I don't think the first anyone would think is, alt right. As long as you're not wearing something akin to a polished entire uniform, or putting on tactical gear, don't worry I think?
Yeah NZ isn't that different to the US but sometimes it is, especially subculturally. I don't think it's corny to be curious about that. I've lived here in the US for a while and I'm still occasionally surprised by sth new here that everyone thinks is obvious.
Some really common advice is to just have one or maybe two milsurp things, and to contrast it with stuff like white, sneakers, loafers, soft shouldered blazer, well worn jeans, etc... looks like that's what people in here have done that works well. Folks in Japan are wee bit more removed from all of this (though it had people protesting the US in US camo at the same time we did) and you see people pulling cool often loose outfits with shit like for example: ECWCS items

Sure the British punks in jump boots, bloused cargos, and bomber jackets are totally normal punks
Uh huh
Go off
Today? That's kinda like not wearing leather jackets cuz that used to scream biker gang
No fucking shit
y'all are burying your heads in the sand to misinterpret what spaghetti is saying
Noone in the US sees someone in milsurp on the street and thinks facist unless they are in a very specific dog whistle type of milsurp dress
Yeah exactly
But that's why I think "be careful with olive" is strange advice
I've been thinking about getting more milsurp lately
Been pondering some fatigues
But looking for more inspo starter guides so this is helpful
This server in general wears a lot of milsurp
Plenty of inspo in #waywt
Imo
Definitely why it's been on my mind
But I also lurk infrequently so...
I really should be reviewing waywt more often
Always #waywt-highlights

alot of milsurp just looks like normal clothes now its so widespread. Unless it has patches or whatever
Makes sense a large amount of mens fashion has been based on military garments.
I mean, they barely exist anymore, but that particular skinhead uniform could be anywhere from very left wing to very right wing, depending.
yeah that kind of outfit was mostly just extremist coded
yeah, though that doesn't necessarily reflect the beliefs of individual skinheads, it's been portrayed that way for so long it's impossible to shake
