Can't Load Iris Installer
Dumb question but what do I need to load the universal installer jar? I'm on a new computer, I know it's java, but I'm looking for the specific default path and what program I need to run it through, because it's been so long since I've had to reinstall any of it. I tried downloading Java manually and running it through javaw.exe, but that does nothing. I also tried a different instance of java.exe which opened a terminal for a second that instantly closed.

For the installer, just make sure you have Java 17. If it still doesn't open, run Jarfix
The universal jar is an installer that you run standalone, similar to running the Optifine jar when installing Optifine.
If you going to run it via command line, the correct way to run it is:
How do I check the version? I just now downloaded and installed it
I'm sure if you just got it you have the proper version
you can always check for updates
java 1.8.0_401?
yup
or use cmd
java 17
Error: Unable to access jarfile iris-installer.jar
you tried to open it?
I tried the command hardster said
just try opening the .jar
I need a file to associate
.jar
with, otherwise it does nothing and asks me what to open it with
java.exe did not workwhat does the icon look like
of the .jar?
it should be a coffee mug
Rename
iris-installer.jar
with the file that you downloaded, of course.
Also, you do not want to run any unprivileged commands with an Administrator command prompt. The normal one is already sufficient.the icon is nothing
and you have java?
I would try jarfix
I just installed it
going in circles, now
did you download it?
or install it?
what is jarfix
something for later
I installed it?
you installed it after downloading, right?
yes
alright
so if you type java in search, things pop up?
just making sure
yes
alr
so try jarfix
what is jarfix
its a way to repair the .java suffix if it isnt working
Is it a command? A program? ????
It's a program to fix Java detection.
ye
I don't have jarfix
I don't like linking downloads, so I won't
but i'm sure you can find it
that's why it's a good troubleshoot
is jarfix supposed to be german
I don't know, I never used Jarfix because I can just do the command thing.
Also, I feel like it might be way easier if you download the exe variant of the installer at this point...
true ngl
where's the exe installer?
the direct source of jarfix is Johann N. Löfflmann btw
Same Iris website, scroll a bit down I assume.
it says download jar, download from github, and download from modrinth
modrinth only has a jar
why don't you just try running jarfix
real quick
it should fix it
Let me learn how to use jarfix. Be back in a moment.
ight
So you download jarfix from this website, after downloading, it's as simple as opening the downloaded exe, after that just follow the dialog window if any.
https://johann.loefflmann.net/en/software/jarfix/index.html
Jarfix
Jarfix fixes the jar file association on Windows
yup
The main issue is that there are so many sites reuploading it
If only Lily bot is online. At least I can do /jarfix and have the bot send instructions of it.
good
hopefully you can run the installer now
try
nope
does it look like a mug?
and right click opening with java se runtime environment doesn't work?
Seems like you have Java 8 installed, likely causing issues as it is the first one detected by Jarfix.
I don't believe that's the issue
my java 17 build 1.8.0_401-b10
is 1.8 as well
Unless you play Minecraft version 1.12 and below, check in your installed programs list and uninstall Java 8 if exists.
yeah you might be right
my java folder has both a 1.8 and 17
What kind of JRE you use? If it's anything other than Oracle, it will have a different path in the program files.
Not sure what the options would be
Like in program files?
seems like the same path, so likely oracle
pink switch
go to that path in program files
the java folder
and screenshot in that folder
that's the issue I believe
I also have a jre-17 in that same folder
so try checking java for updates
how
by searching java in your search bar
and selecting check for updates
what
what does this mean
open that
and then update now
One question... Nevermind
wow
You are using Oracle's JRE, correct?
I have no idea what JRE or oracle is
well not true
jre is java
Oracle is one of the many providers of JRE. As far as I know, Oracle's JRE does not upgrade your Java to a higher edition, i.e. not upgrading from Java 8 to Java 17. For that, you will need to download and install Java 17 instead.
(Please try to bear with my incompetence; My computer died a couple months ago so now i'm trying to gete evrything set up on a new one, java must have been already installed fine on that old one)
I just downloaded java from the java website
Yeah that one auto downloads Java 8...
:linus:
Look up Java 17. It should give you options to download the correct version of Java required by the installer.
wait so do I want oracle? oracle was the first thing to come up
yes
There's a reason why so many other solutions available. Microsoft, Eclipse Temurin, GraalVM, Azul Zulu or even Oracle itself if you like to continue using it.
Many solutions, some may have better performance for Minecraft than others like GraalVM.
I don't understand
I just want iris
Just download Java 17 from Oracle
????
https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/downloads/#java17
its 17 you want
so select it
make sure to choose windows as well
and get the installer
okay now I have jdk-17
alr cool
and now the installer works ok cool
alr nice
I will now vanish to shadow realm and leave the server probably
I honestly don't remember getting java 17
cya then
:haha_yes:
Let's hope they don't come back asking support for Distant Horizons...
:linus:
I think you nerded them out
