Why do i have to register a getWidgets method at a resource?

When i was building a simple stat widget, its working only passing the getHeaderWidgets at a class that extends from ListRecords. If i comment all getWidgets ar the resource, it keeps working. Why? What the porpouse of getWidgets method?
