Low GPU Usage Iris + DH, AMD RX 7900XT
Hello! I have been trying out Iris with Distant Horizons, I am very impressed so far, but ever since I tried to download the latest version of Iris (From the Iris Website) GPU Usage seems to hang around 60% when shaders are enabled.
This is interesting to me because I have a different version of Iris with DH Support that shows way better GPU Utilization, this Iris version is: "iris-mc1.20.4-1.7-alpha.1-ba8b16d4.jar", it seems to work way better compared to the latest one in the Iris Website and the latest test build. in the #unstable-releases channel.
Is this Alpha Version newer and I'm just confused or is there something wrong with the version from the Iris Website?
I have included a video comparing the 2 versions.
Iris "iris-1.7.0-snapshot+mc1.20.4-5983468.jar" shows exactly the same GPU usage behavior as "1.7.0-snapshot+mc1.20.4-7fcec4d".
I have tried installing other optimization mods to try and improve performance, while these mods do improve performance a bit, they don't improve it enough.
I have also tried messing with the shaderpack settings, but that doesn't help either.
Sorry in advance if I just got different versions confused and this is actually expected behavior.
Here's a list of my PC specs:
CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900XT
RAM: 16GB DDR4@3600Mhz CL18
OS: Windows 11

Is it just lost FPS and Stuttering or Lost FPS only? If the game is working fine then there's nothing to worry about
When everything is loaded, there's little stutter, but there's a massive FPS loss by using the Snapshot instead of the Alpha
You can see in the screenshot I go from 214FPS to 105FPS
Can you list the mods youre currently using with their versions? I have a RX 7900 XT and a Ryzen 5 7600, yet my frames are around 50-60 when using the iris+DH mod from https://youtu.be/pIRSjKz9RLg

Minecraft Never Looked This Good + Guide | Distant Horizons + Shaders
Distant Horizons has come a long way. This video shows you how to install it, as well as shaders to get the best out of the experience. From start to end, you should be able to get ingame and get going as soon as possible using this guide! Minecraft has never looked this good. You should now be able to see into the far distance in your world.
D...
GPU util is also around 40-50% which is a lot less than what you reported
At first I was using the ones that come with the Iris Installer, installing more mods increased FPS but not by much.
I'll give you a list of all the mods shortly
And Iris, of course
As of now I'll stick to the Iris Alpha Build since that one is giving me crazy good performance
Huh, that's a bit weird since your CPU should have better single core performance than mine
All the more reason as to why I'm confused
I also killed all the entities in my world in a desperate attempt to decrease CPU usage 😅
The thing is
even with just iris + Bliss shader, my fps falls to around 60-70
I haven't tried this Iris Snapshot without DH
I'll give that a try
I think you should give the version that runs well for me a try.
Here is the performance I'm currently getting:
Im going to try with another iris version and check
Looking there you seem to have a very similar problem, your CPU is being loaded too much and your GPU is probly not doing much because of that.
Check in your Distant Horizons Settings that you're not generating world
The version that actually works well for me is:
1.7-alpha.1-ba8b16d4
I am also using the 24.2.1 AMD Adrenalin Driver.Might be, but the performance I'm getting with just iris and the shader is still around 60-70
is gpu usage still below 90%?
I'm also on that version, although there is a newer one.
Yeah, the new one released today xD
Never saw it exceed 50%
Im pretty sure it has to do with the iris version im using
yeah, I think despite not having DH enabled, CPU Usage is probably still too high.
I narrowed it down to the Iris version yesterday, only conclusion I could arrive to.
Just look at the insane difference
This is without DH
Yeah, GPU usage is only at around 30%
Problem definitely lies on iris version
Looks like I'll have to look through these when I have the time
I am unsure if you can find the version I'm using anymore though, at least, I cannot find it anywhere anymore, and I swear I downloaded it from this Discord
I'll look at previous posts and see if i can find it
If anything, even the newer version would be helping my performance
The version you're looking for is:
1.7-alpha.1-ba8b16d4
Alright, I'll look for it, thanks again
No problem!
Yo im just curious what CPU mode are you using in Distant Horizons? I have a 14700k + 1080 ti and my usage settles around 90% - 100% GPU, and 40% CPU on "Balanced" mode, of course it spikes to 100% on both if you use "I paid for the whole cpu mode"
I also allocated 8gb ram and the usage is around 4 - 5 gb
I have a similar framerate
i am having this exact issue, running iris-1.7.0-snapshot+mc1.20.4-5983468 with DistantHorizons-fabric-2.0.2-a-dev-1.20.4 seems to cause excruciatingly low fps (35-50), rolled back my iris to iris-mc1.20.4-1.6.17 and fps is now 150-250, obviously though distant horizons is acting a bit untoward
as you can see
BSL:linus:
Tried playing without DH and a normal version of iris, using the same shaderpack, bliss, was able to play with 40 render distance with around 70-80 fps
issue definitely lies in the experimental iris version, hopefully this will be addressed in the future updates
using bliss on version 1.6.17 of iris does not work with distant horizons, BSL however does work but not correctly as shown in the image above
I've also tried Bliss + DH on my 7800xt + 5800x3d and I can't get more than 80% gpu usage on the iris version in dh-compatibility-faq no matter what.
With the new iris version even without DH, complementary and bliss shaders have very low fps (40ish) with low usage (40%ish), while with the stable non-DH iris version from February I have more than 100 fps on 99% usage.
So it's definetely something to do with the newest Iris version on AMD GPUs. And this is with pretty much all performance mods available enabled.
Felt like you guys missed a few key points here. Shaders designed for future versions of Distant Horizons make use of native support provides by both mods, which are currently in testing phase. Previous versions implements a hack to get shaders working without the need for shader devs to introduce new code. The beta made significant changes that requires shader packs to adapt, which only a few has (see #dh-shader-testing).
You are using an outdated version of Iris which will have jankiness in shaders. For the beta version of Iris, only shaders listed in #dh-shader-testing are supported as of now. In the future, more shaders are going to adapt to the new version once both Distant Horizons and Iris made a public release.
Still though, here I am using the Bliss version compatible with DH, and as you can see in both the screenshots, and video, everything is working as it should, both Iris Versions are supposed to be compatible with DH (I downloaded them from this Discord Server, as I initially stated), only difference between these 2 versions being, GPU Usage and FPS.
While I can just use the version of iris that works just fine, I wanted to point this out for any other users seeing low GPU usage.
I hope that whenever a more stable version of Iris with DH support releases, I'll see performance more similar to the
alpha.1-ba8b16d4
version, instead of the one currently available.is there a fix for this? i have 40 fps and 20% gpu usage on an rx 6700 xt :(
I'm using the same issue as you with low GPU usage, using the newest Iris Snapshot, where did you get that alpha version, wich seemed to work better on your system?
As of now I am just using the version that works well for me and I'll keep an eye on new versions to see if the issue is addressed.
I got it from #unstable-releases
Sadly, I think most of the older versions were deleted therefore I am unsure if you'll be able to find anything
I already looked there and didn't find it
Yeah, I've tried to look for it too
Could you send the file to me?
I downloaded it from back when it was still there
Sorry, but sharing jar files or executables is against the rules
Could you dm me?
I probably should have discovered this earlier, but for anyone looking for this version of Iris, building Iris from source (branch 1.20.3-dh) and using that, gives very good performance on my 7900XT.
I don't expect anyone to actually do this, and I expect even more bugs than usual for this version compared to the one in the Iris Installer, but for anyone adventurous enough, it gives very good performance.
Also seems compatible with ImmediatelyFast.
For anyone curious, the "ba8b16d4" is just the id of the commit in the Iris Github repo.
My gpu is at 2% and my cpu is at 100%
that is definitely not normal, are you sure your CPU is not working on something else?
Like world generation?
Nope
Well
I have dh set to 500 and i have bliss on
The frame rate usually sticks around 40
To 60
With my gpu staying at 2%
GPU?
Yeah
Cpu stays at 100%
I mean, what gpu do you have?
And what CPU?
May sound bad but ryzen 5 4650g and a rx 6600 (going to be upgrading to a amd ryzen 5 5600 soon)
32 chunks and dh set at 500
Ooof, lower the render distance from 32 chunks, the 4650G is a realtively weak CPU
Loading 32 chunks
set it at 12 or something like that
Sure
But even when i do that the gpu still stays at 2%
Doesnt really help with shaders
Even with shaders, your CPU still needs to do some work on loaded chunks.
also check that you're using your discrete GPU and not the integrated GPU, seems to be a common problem.
specially with Minecraft
The hdmi cord is in the gpu tho
oh okay
just asking, just in case
Theres no bottle neck so idk why gpu isnt helping
Do you have any other mods?
Quite a few but they are just bug fixes and camera bob stuff
and do you have enough ram assigned to minecraft?
Never knew we could assign ram to minecraft but i dont think ram is the issue
Give it a try anyways, and try without any other mods if possible, to issolate the issue
Alrighty
When i get home ill ask more questions if the issue isnt solved
Seems everyone has the same issue as me
20% usage always dipping down to 2%
oh, 2% is probably when your CPU is doing something, but still, 20% GPU usage is still low.
With shaders, GPU usage should stay close to 100%
No gpu issues since it always 100% in games like elden ring etc so yeah
Prob mods and ram assignments
my gpu usage is normal on normal version of iris
Same
If the issue you're having is the same one as the one everyone in this thread is having.
This should work
Ah
Im mostly trying to stick with 1.20.1 since all the mods i like are based on that version
if you read my original message on this thread, I was talking about how there was one specific version of Iris that gave very good performance, while every other version doesn't give that great performance.
I tried the same lol, but only this specific version for 1.20.4 gives decent performance
Bummer really, was hoping there was a 1.20.1 iris performace fix
Intresting
Will they release a fix in a month or so?
No idea, we have to understand that Iris with DH support is still under development
So stuff like this happens, and it will eventually be solved.
One of the first things I tried was putting this in All of Fabric 7 xD
I know it's not recommended but it didn't hurt to try
Lol
Alrighty sure
Idm losing out on camera mods until theres a fix
So thanks for the help!
no problem!
disable Smart Acces Memory
30-60fps to 90-120fps
If you have a 240hz monitor I recommend limiting it to 120fps and using lossless scaling
guys i have found that using version iris-mc1.20.4-1.7-alpha.1-ba8b16d4 seems to work and much better performance
https://discord.com/channels/774352792659820594/774354522361299006/1218591157118963802
Just tried it out there
Actually does help quite alot
Now i need a better cpu that can support my gpu
Yes, this is the version I've been talking about
Didn't know it was still out there
:linus:
On a new world, that's very greedy...
do you still have the file?
its unavailable now
Which version are you using now?
Just tried it, it fixed it on my end. I'm getting 98% GPU usage even while it's building the DH chunks, awesome.
can i get the file?
@IMS can I post the file in here because people keep asking me for the jar
no
I removed it because it’s unstable and I don’t want people using it
I don’t know why these issues are happening…
Is every user with this issue on an AMD card?
believe so
Hm
and nothing’s wrong in the log files?
cant say ive looked
might be helpful to do that
@IMS here you go, you can probably decifer these better than my self, there are some runtime exceptions but yeah ive never done any java/mc development
Ah, it's one of those
Unknown variable: is_alive
errors...let me check if iris-mc1.20.4-1.7-alpha.1-ba8b16d4 has the same error
same exception
that’s not an error
ignore it
I’ll see later if my 7900 XTX has good GPU usage in the F3 menu reading
Is there anything specific I should do to test, like use certain settings?
you can tell right away without adjusting any settings
then using alpha 1-ba8b16d4 you can also tell immediately that its like 5x better fps
@rhys can you try something new?
iris-1.7.0-snapshotmc1.20.4-482321c-dirty
vs
iris-1.7.0-snapshot+mc1.20.4-482321c
top left for fps
this is with other mods loaded btw
@IMS
so I fixed it?
:ioa:
seems like it chief
cool
it was like a 3 line fix
nice, what was it?
do you mind sharing?
seems like AMD is bad at handling the "debug groups" feature
which gives developers more info when making shaders
so I'm just disabling that unless you're a shader dev
ah typical amd :)
I'll try giving it a go as well
nice work @IMS
Yeah this fixed it, nice. Don't forget to disable ImmediatelyFast with the new version.
what do you mean by this?
The previous old build was still compatible with the mod ImmediatelyFast, this newest one IMS posted isn't so if the game crashes for someone who tries it, it's probably ImmediatelyFast causing it.
this was fixed in an IF update
Does this still help, or is this unneeded now that the bug is fixed? Won't be at my PC for a few days so I can't test atm
My bad, I forgot to update IF
Seems the fix was in 2 days Xd
My fps decreased by 3😔
Atleast theres less stuttering
Im having the same problem with my rx6700xt getting 25-30% gpu usage and 90fps on 1080p reso
Im not using dh mod just iris-mc1.20.1-1.6.17 and BSL shader v8.2.08 it happens in other shaders too like bliss
@jelo
They fixed it
Here
Also
Completary shaders has a fix for amd gpus
I have the same issue, but I do not know how to add it. I tried replacing my iris from the installer with this one, but nothing changed. Am I doing something wrong?
I am using the distant horizons+iris
Gotta say its the same for me no change but yeah, completary shaders helped
Complemplemenantary shaders are compatible? I can't find them in the Shader Testing channel.
Im getting low gpu usage too
not even using DH
weird I got more fps too while running a ryzen 7 5800h and an rtx 3060m
I think it was a shader issue?
I changed a setting down and it improved my performance significantly even tho it said its biggest perf hit would be vram
Which setting? I'm having a similar issue currently on my 6700XT
this one
i had it set to 32/block and my game ran really bad
im using rethinking voxels
Yeah I tried with voxels now, seems that like that one is the default setting
i have the same graphics card as you and i got the same issue as you
will also add that the latest build posted in this thread completley sorted my performance issues, the "official" dh one was struggling with 60fps (with dh disabled), now its 140fps consistent, a night and day difference. im using an amd 5800x3d cpu with an amd 7800xt gpu, feel free to ask any questions
Wow it’s so cool I think I’m gonna try to do that
Where ?
Nvm I found it
You should look at the version IMS uploaded here, it seems to have fixed things for most of us.
yeah thx a lot !
is voxels is compatible ?
unfortunately no
its the only shader that tickles my fancy so i use a few performance mods and for some reason my game runs fine at 32 chunks
oh my pc die with 60 fps with bliss shaders 💀
if there are settings to have a little more fps like 80 fps its really good
bliss runs at like 160 for me
i need gi tho
colored lighting is something i cant not have now lmao
can we desactivate it ?
for better performance idk you have a good pc
my 2080 💀
i have a 4070
ye its normal
there’s performance profiles in the shader settings yea
oh thx im gonna see this
yee np
can you tell me where ?
Oh i thought you were talking about voxels
bliss doesnt have global illumination
ohhhhh thx okay okay
i tought there are settings for bliss
you could go into the sub menus and drop the settings down a bit maybe
yeah i think im gonna do that
thx
Haven't read the entire thread, but I had stuttering issues while Freesync Premium Pro was turned on
fixed it by turning it off
13700k/7900xtx/g95sc
could've been down to samsung's firmware but dunno, just figured i'd say it incase it fixes it for someone else
With or without vsync?
without
since that's the main purpose of freesync; minimal tearing with lower than vsync latency
I just tried with 16GB ram and it is terrible, 32gb 6400mhz cl 32 is fluid
200chunk tests
ryzen 5 7600
rx 6800xt and 5600xt
