Cursors not updating properly in KDE

The cursor behaviors unpredictably and erratically when i try to change it in the system settings, but it will never change to what i want. The cursor will often switch themes per window whenever I try to change the theme.

X11 or Wayland? if you dont know open a host terminal and enter:
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

wayland thx for taking the time to help
tryhardsoccermomswag
yeah i dont know if ill be able to fix it 😅 how did you install the cursor theme?
ask me about nap-kins
through the kde settings gui lemme screenshot
tryhardsoccermomswag
yeah try not to do that with most things here
tryhardsoccermomswag
related to the filesystem question you asked in #🎮bazzite, plasma themes expect mutable traditional linux filesystems
ask me about nap-kins
ahh that clears up a lot
tryhardsoccermomswag
they should probably be installed manually in ~/.local/share/icons but that still may cause issues anyways some applications that are XWayland also do not like cursor themes
ask me about nap-kins
hm so no way to change the freaking cursor?
tryhardsoccermomswag
well you can
ask me about nap-kins
😐 oh ohw how
tryhardsoccermomswag
install it manually but even you'll probably run into issues here, test this out for me
ask me about nap-kins
ok
tryhardsoccermomswag
reboot with X11 open applications with the custom cursor see if it still has issues i think a lot of applications running in XWayland break cursor themes but i could be wrong
ask me about nap-kins
hm. still having the same erratic behavior switching to a completely unrelated theme when in newly opened applications so am i right in assuming immutable distros just have this unfixable problem
tryhardsoccermomswag
looking more into this

😐
tryhardsoccermomswag
it's flatpak related
ask me about nap-kins
oh thanks
tryhardsoccermomswag
you may want to open flatseal and give filesystem access to ~/.icons/:ro for every application acting erratically or set it up globally
ask me about nap-kins
will try
tryhardsoccermomswag
lmk if that works so i can document it
ask me about nap-kins
oh wait you never told me how to change the cursors manually
tryhardsoccermomswag
you download it from pling/kde store (on the website) and extract it to ~/.icons/
ask me about nap-kins
ok it's already in that directory now what
tryhardsoccermomswag
that's it im guessing it's more of a flatpak problem though so i would def try what i said in flatseal then re-opening the applications
ask me about nap-kins
then what
tryhardsoccermomswag
thats it thats the manual installation but like do what i said above
ask me about nap-kins
the cursor didnt change
tryhardsoccermomswag
did you add the flatseal permission
ask me about nap-kins
i did the flatseal thing already ya
tryhardsoccermomswag
re-opened the problematic application(s)?
ask me about nap-kins
just pasting a folder into another folder doesn't seem like it's the complete steps to change the cursor
tryhardsoccermomswag
you can build it manually but i dont see the point when it's already built
ask me about nap-kins
ok hm

it requires a bunch of packages to the host to be layered i dont think that would fix anything do you know for sure that this doesnt have issues on other linux operating systems? using the same applications as flatpaks?
ask me about nap-kins
i havent tried changing the cursor before sorry anyway uh you said that i cant use plasma settings to change the cursor right what do i use then? a termnial command?
tryhardsoccermomswag
no you already did it manually honestly you can probably use system settings for cursors it's mostly themes/styles that need to be installed manually sorry for the confusion
ask me about nap-kins
i think the flatseal thing worked a little the cursor is now oreo in brave and librewolf but still the hardcoded default in discord
tryhardsoccermomswag
open flatseal again and go to discord
ask me about nap-kins
ok done
tryhardsoccermomswag
and under "socket" > toggle on wayland
ask me about nap-kins
ok done will restart discord now
tryhardsoccermomswag
ok this might not work tbh. discord might be garbage at this despite the flatpak being the 'official' linux package i usually run discord in a browser to avoid other issues with it on linux
ask me about nap-kins
ok this is a certified linux moment hm.
tryhardsoccermomswag
it happens personally i use vesktop/armcord but those may be against discord's ToS
ask me about nap-kins
hm so i guess what worked was the flatseal thing
tryhardsoccermomswag
yeah flatpaks usually dont like having permission to your files
ask me about nap-kins
not sure what to make of this situation
tryhardsoccermomswag
the applications that worked with your cursor theme before were applications that had permission to your filesystem 😅 desktop linux is in a transitioning phase that's how it has been for a while now so everything is a mess while everyone is figuring out whats the best method for everything but we're getting there
ask me about nap-kins
thanks
