Tie Stylizing

I recently bought this tie and I've been wondering on how it should be worn bc I'm a little eager to wear it. I'm putting pictures of the tie from the site I bought it from. I don't wanna take it out the package yet, but if yall think it would help to see it in person then I can take a picture of it within in the package

i am not a big fan of that tie or novelty ties in general to be honest
ultra

😦 I think its cool
zeometer
zeometer11mo ago
i am just a single person on the internet, if you like it wear it
ultra
ultraOP11mo ago
yeah but ur first comment was about not liking it LOL
zeometer
zeometer11mo ago
because of the pattern and the colors i would pair it with more subdued pieces otherwise it becomes overloaded i was gonna post both in quick succession otherwise it becomes a wall of words lol
ultra
ultraOP11mo ago
ur entitled to not like it of course, I just want some advice on how to wear it. unless the advice is to not wear it lol
zeometer
zeometer11mo ago
but - navy or charcoal suit, light colored shirt (white, off white, light blue, light pink, maybe a light green?), black belt/shoes solid colored sock of some sort

Tbh my advice would be don’t buy things you don’t know how to wear, especially if you’re just starting out
ultra
ultraOP11mo ago
no like. I know how to wear a tie I just want it to look cooler with what i'm wearing but I understand what you mean

It's a little hard for us to give advice on this without knowing what else you have in your wardrobe. My advice would be to try to make an outfit with this and post in #styling-suggestions for feedback.

Please Go Away
Please Go Away11mo ago
I will also mention that you may get similar feedback if you post there. When you ask for feedback here you will sometimes hear from people who disagree with you and should be open to hearing their perspective. I'm not the most fashionable person on this server, but I've learned a lot from other people telling me they disliked something I was doing or disagreed with my opinion.
ultra
ultraOP11mo ago
I'm more than open to feedback! I even asked if the advice was to not wear the tie lol. I just disliked how it started off with an opinion about the tie itself/ties like it rather than how to style it, which was my question. Also for more clarification on the purchase of the tie, it was a limited time thing, which is one of the reasons of why I bought it. I also like the franchise its from a lot, so I figured why not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

wdalin11mo ago
Black ties are inherently more formal and generally worn with black or very dark suits. The colorful and playful pattern on your tie clashes with that idea and makes it harder to style even in more casual styles that a black tie might fit (hedi slp or Yohji). That being said these are rules for nerds and if you like it you can just wear it like a black tie and 99% of people won’t care
ultra
ultraOP11mo ago
btw I dunno if me asking for advice on how to style the tie came off as stupid or dumb, but like. is that not what this is for lol. how will I wear anything if I don't buy it first, yknow? like I said previously, it was a limited time thing so its not like I could just wait for me to become more versatile in the world of ties to buy it lol. Of course, yall didn't know that but still. If i'm coming off as aggressive my bad, I just don't appreciate being treated like my questions are wrong lol
wdalin
wdalin11mo ago
For what it’s worth I don’t like the tie either, and saying a particular item doesn’t look good is valid feedback, not all items are designed equally aesthetically. That being said it obviously has more appeal to you due to the game its from, and I’m of the opinion that you should wear things you like. My advice would be to wear it like a regular black tie and accept that most people not in the know of that particular franchise won’t find it as aesthetically pleasing, but 99% of people won’t care anyways.
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
Saying you do not like a particular item can be valid feedback yes, but without any depth or detail as to why can be pretty useless ngl. Anyway, I appreciate the feedback I've been given. Thank you @Commie Garcon lol did u leave a message and immediately delete it? Something about Dan flashes

The tie does remind me a bit of that sketch

could've like. Said sorry I dunno 🧍 alright man Oh also, the shirt you're referencing doesn't personally look bad to me. It's a silly shirt, and reminds me of the carpets at arcades, bowling alleys, or roller rinks. It's corny but I kinda like it lol

a bit tough to think of because of how whimsical it is (so i couldn't just, like, repeat classic menswear rules to you), and without knowing the contexts you're going to wear it to. like, to the office or to a night out with your friends who are also fans of the franchise? if it's the latter, you can go as silly as you want. i could see some japanese guy's daily outfit ig account wearing this with say, some charcoal flannel trousers and a denim jacket and i would think "i definitely wouldn't wear that, but i do like it"
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
Here is one person I've seen wearing the tie (the acrylic figurine in their pocket is a character from the franchise so I think it's just meant to be funny, I don't think they wore it like that for the whole day) And yeah, I was planning to wear the tie with friends of mine who are fans of it to, or just know what it's referencing lol also charcoal flannel trousers and a denim jacket sounds cool I think. 🤔 I'm open to all possibilities of wearing the tie, not just in a suit 😄 Thank you

zeometer
zeometer10mo ago
also out of curiosity what kind of stuff do you typically wear? a tie lends itself to a collared shirt by design but there's a lot of pseudo suiting (jacket or outer layer and pants) that could work well with it
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
I wear jeans a lot. When its warmer, I wear a jean jacket, however it does have patches so it might interfere with the patterning of the tie. I also wear boots a lot when its not too warm (standard timbs). I also wear khaki pants. I also wear a good number of themed shirts, but I do own some flannel. This is pretty jumbled but I'm trying to think of what I have off the top of my head LOL

here is an example of an outfit id say I wear like maybe every two weeks the belt is old so if u see some fabric peeling off that is why also sorry about that fucked up bathroom that is not mine. I was in public
raisinpie
raisinpie10mo ago
It's gonna be really hard to wear that tie without a (plain) collared shirt I don't see it working with a plaid flannel
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
I'm planning to buy some maybe two or three I haven't owned many throughout my life
raisinpie
raisinpie10mo ago
plain white shirt would be the easiest way to style the tie
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
I agree
raisinpie
raisinpie10mo ago
It's very loud and having too much going on will be distracting but sounds like you know that already
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
ye
raisinpie
raisinpie10mo ago
I think denim jacket with patches would be cool
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
oh really? I was worried it'd be too many patterns and stuff
raisinpie
raisinpie10mo ago
I wouldn't go too formal, it lends itself well to an intentionally rule breaking outfit
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
yeah I dont wanna be too formal, just like something a little more nicer than average
raisinpie
raisinpie10mo ago
Eye test would be best but it doesn't sound like too much, since the denim isn't like the background of the tie if that makes sense
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
like if I was going to a diner or bistro Hm yeah I think I understand what you mean I like the idea of wearing it with the denim jacket and trousers though id think itd be cool I wonder if the color/pattern would have to be charcoal flannel though
raisinpie
raisinpie10mo ago
Canadian tux could work

That's true 🤔

There's lots of loud pieces but they're balanced out by simple ones, so it's not overwhelming
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
thats a good example, I like that fit I understand what you mean Oh hey btw, when you said charcoal flannel trousers, were u thinking of any specific brands or stores? I wanna know so I can see if I could get a pair As in did u have a brand that came to mind when you said that, or was it like you were reminded of something you saw once in passing

budget and location would help with that question tbh

I'm from NYC so ive been checking out the armoury and CEGO CEGO doesn't have any white shirts on their site, but I know they make custom shirts and I've heard a good number of things about the armoury, although its $$$ wait this is in regards to the pants, but I was thinking about shirts as well, sorry. I know CEGO is known for their shirts lol
zeometer
zeometer10mo ago
np it's a fair assumption that you can get both at one place
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
Also as for budget, maybe somewhere around like 500-600 dollars? I might be able to get away with spending a little bit more than that, but I'm confident with saying 500. 😎

not any particular brand -- pretty much everyone should have their own interpretation of charcoal/dark grey flannel i'd think. everything else is a matter of taste i.e. pleats, cuffs, width, waistband. if you're in NYC and want to check things out in person, jpress is a solid option for sure. you may want to see if you can get any inspiration from no man walks alone? potentially drakes as well

Yeah ive heard good things about no man walks alone as well. I think ive heard drakes once before too. I'll check em out

Cego is a good value for a bespoke shirt. I have a shirt from them and it was $200 to give you an idea However that's still a lot of money for a shirt in general! Carl at cego will have a lot of interesting fabrics including vintage ones. His website is not updated fyi (I've asked him)
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
yeah it is, but I know they can last a long time and less is more etc etc
Benji
Benji10mo ago
Do you know if you have specific sizing issues that would make a bespoke shirt necessary? Honestly I don't know how long shirts last...
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
Uh well. does having a bust count I dunno
Bigelow
Bigelow10mo ago
Your body's measurements aren't as useful as the measurements of clothing that fit you well. If you know the waist size of some pants that are comfortable on you then that's a good place to start looking
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
Can that apply for shirts as well? I'd be so nervous LOL
Benji
Benji10mo ago
I'm not sure, hopefully someone here with more knowledge can tell you. I remember Derek Guy talking about this in the context of suits but not shirts
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
Yeah derek guy made a post about it recently I think
Bigelow
Bigelow10mo ago
Yes definitely. If you measure a shirt that fits you well and is comfortable on you then you can use that as a reference for buying new shirts. Same with any other article of clothing
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
ooh alright Thank you also to add on to the shirts, I checked out the drake's website and they do a bundle for some shirts, but I don't know how worth it it is
Bigelow
Bigelow10mo ago
Drake's makes good clothing but I'm very secondhand pilled, I love my Polo RL OCBDs and they frequently go up on ebay for $20 or less Makes it feel wrong to think about spending 8x that on a new OCBD
ultra
ultraOP10mo ago
I want to go thrifting as well. I dont have too big of an issue with ebay but I like being able to test something out in person
zeometer
zeometer10mo ago
the bundle is worth it relative to their shirting which i find rather very expensive at retail cost
