Do these Athletic-fit chinos fit me?

J.Crew 1040s. Squatting and deadlifting has finally caught up to me — had to give away my entire drawer of older stretch 484s. These fit me better (a bit of room I can pull away especially in my glutes) but the pocket still looks like it’s stretching and I’m still noticing a bit of tenting in front. I know baggy/pleated fits are more trendy these days but I’m not looking for that, just want a pair of decent-fitting chinos that’s lightly form-fitting — should I keep this in my waist size, or size up and then tailor the waist down?

Imo they’re too small. For the reasons you mentioned

I suspected as much. Thanks, always good to get a second eye on this kinda stuff

I second that they're too small. If the waist fits you properly, I'd recommend trying the classic fit. They're not slim but they're not baggy either and given that your lower body physique seems similar to mine you'll probably fill them out more than the catalog models.

I wanna say they fit my waist? It’s a bit snug but I can still pull a significant amount away from my waist, and I’m carrying a bit of extra weight/BF% right now due to bulking, which will go away when I cut. The mantra that was repeated to me was that it had to stay on without a belt, and that the waist shouldn’t be all crumpled when I do wear a belt. (Sorry to just send pics of my belly button lmao)

And I did actually get to try on the Classics! It’s a nice look and I’m not against it…but maybe I’m still stuck in my 2010s ways and am attached to the tapered/“slim-fit” look in my mind? Gah

Haha, yeah I do actually like the looser look in this color I think for brown I was thinking more about wearing them with my boots and stuff. So more like this kind of fit. I own too much flannel 😅

(Obviously the first one from J.Crew is not quite as much of saturated brown, I'm still looking at other options right now)

Looser fit would still look better here, straight fit corduroy would look great

These are the Levi’s 502 I have, they fit me really comfortably, basically trying to find something that is close to this — but I guess looser is trendier now eh?

You don't have to follow the trend if it's not your thing, worth trying before knocking though. Slim fit isn't inherently bad, it just doesn't work in the 3 examples you linked. The Theme waywt had a lot of good slim fit https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1142196512034668594/1203023949353713664

Ooh, the fit on the left is actually really cool with the mocs! Thanks for sharing. I think I saw J.Crew selling straight fit corduroy but their 770s don't fit me well either so I might have to size up or look elsewhere

It's really good, from a clutch cafe or kafka look book i think

In terms of a tapered look do you think these 502s are a better fit or still too tight? Gonna check out the theme in the waywt channel you linked as well

I think they look fine, 505 is another option
